Forced automatic updates is a violation of UX

Recently I went to settings to check what new system updates there are.

Unprompted, my headset proceeded to download and install the update, stating to reboot to apply the update.

After the update completed, I went back and checked the page again, noticing another update with the message "This update will automatically apply after October 10." I have turned off all automatic update settings, including security patches and automatic reboots.

This is unacceptable.

This is a violation of software design and user experience. The user should have the choice to apply updates, and the device should remain fully functional without applying updates. The reason why I wanted to see about updates was because the follow window feature has gone missing, and the update has not fixed this issue.

Additionally, apps on the headset no longer function without updating, despite apps such as Steam Link functioning fine previously, and likely able to function with an outdated version.

And I do not want to see any nonsense community contributor reply from Meta stating some nonsense like "automatic updates enhance the user experience" or "improve security" or "We are disappointed you are dissatisfied with your experience." I want control of my headset. I want to choose when and how and why to apply updates. The only way you, Meta, can satisfy my demand, is by disabling the forced automatic update feature, and forced app updates to open.

  • Furthermore: the changelogs "improved system stability" or "fixed bugs" is not only vague, it's indicative of dark patterns in UI to hide more malignant update content. Be specific on what bugs you fixed or where you improved the UI experience. These are BASIC QA and dev pipeline tasks; I, a master college student, should NOT be dictating the obvious on how Meta should be running their VR team.

I switched off auto updates too,and have noticed the final date. I usually wait for a while to make sure nobody was reporting any issues before installing it.  It is possible that not installing the updates can result in bricked devices or security holes. Android phones update every month or two for the same reason, but you still have the ability not to update if you want. Meta should possibly do the same, maybe with a warning that if you don't update, your device can be at risk of security breaches and loss of functionality.. It will give users the choice of updating or not.

  • Hahaha exactly, dude i cannot even tell if update finished. Headset goes black no leds ,nothing in Meta link app. I don';t want to manually power up headset using button to not interrupt it. And nothing in user manual. Cannot find anything here or online LOL so weird - dead internet theory???? MUCH!
