Help! Uploading jpg and mp4 files into Quest3??

I have an Insta 360 camera and a bunch of photos and videos from it downloaded onto my laptop. I converted them into jpg and mp4 files. I would like to upload them onto my Quest 3 to see them as an immersive experience. (ChatGPT told me that this is the correct format for use on a VR headset).

ChatGPT is giving me instructions (plug the headset into my Macbook Air laptop's USB-C port, use the OpenMTP application). But I can't get it to work. On the Quest headset, I don't see an option for uploading files.

Can somebody help me with this? Aside from using the Quest headset for games, I would like to view my photos and videos in a 360 degree environment. Thanks!

  • The two apps that it suggests have problems. MacDroid requires a paid account to upload files from my Mac to the Quest.  Android File Transfer is no longer supported by the developer and is known to crash. Any other suggestions?

  • I don't use macs so no idea on the specific steps, but its strange it can't just connect. (On Windows it's just plug the headset in. No extra software needed)

Another way to go is Skybox VR (maybe others too, but I use Skybox). It's a video and image player that has a Windows and MacOS streaming app. Basically you'd run the streaming app on your mac and it shares any directories you choose on your wifi so the Quest (running Skybox) can see them. This is great for easy file management, plus saves memory on your headset. I've used it (the Windows streaming app with Quest app) to view videos and photos on my PC that were taken with my Insta360.

Unfortunately Skybox is commercial, so you'd have to pay for it.

  • Woo hoo, I got it working! So far I have only downloaded one photo and one video file from my Mac desktop to the Quest. I viewed them in Immersive mode -- SO COOL, like being there again!!! Exactly what I wanted!!!  (I used OpenMTP....it actually did work earlier; I just didn't understand what I was doing, LOL).

OK, here's a question: Before I move anything more onto the Quest, where is the best place to put these on my Quest? Right now, I just have the two files in the Quest FILES folder. I have a lot of 360 photos and videos on my desktop, divided into folders by date and place (most are from vacations). Is there a way to make a file structure on the Quest so that I can find specific photos or videos easily?
