High battery drain in sleep

I've noticed the battery drain in sleep mode is significant. It will drain almost completely over night. Is this normal fro the Quest? It's been doing this since we got it, are there any fixes?

I've never tried leaving mine in sleep mode overnight. Why the heck would you do that anyway? Apart from the battery health, one can never trust that a switched on device won't catch fire if a component blows. It's one reason mobile phone companies tell you not to leave your phone on a bed or other flammable surfaces. The Quest headset would be a plastic firebomb. Switch it off when your sleeping. It's not safe to leave a complex device with a lithium battery unattended. It could burn your house down.

Its basically just an android device, there's no reason to power it down. I'm not sure where you got this notion that it's somehow dangerous, it's not. Mobile devices catching fire is incredibly rare and almost always a cause of a defective product or misuse. The power off option is burred in the menus and I would rather not have to sit and wiat for it to boot up every time I want to use it.

I always leave the charge cable connected when I put the headset to sleep overnight, so battery drain is never an issue. Same with my mobile phone.

    My headsets don't do that.

But I don't actively put them in sleep mode in the menu - not sure if this makes a difference -  I just take them off and put them on the shelf/table.🤷‍♀️

Does it always drain fast or is it maybe just when the headset receive an update?

  • Mine is doing the exact same thing and it doesn't seem like Meta cares or they just aren't looking at these forums. I have to shut off the headset to prevent battery drainage. This seems like a significant design flaw. I guess for a device that normally only gets about 2 hours of active battery use, they didn't think saving battery was useful.

Battery drain isn't a general problem but it seems to affect some headsets. The original post is over two months old, maybe check the forum for possible solutions from users. 2 hours active use is a balance between battery size and headset weight. To extend battery life you can use a battery headstrap. For a solution you could try a factory reset which can sometimes fix the problem. If not you might need a replacement battery if it's had a lot of charging cycles. They don't last  forever. As for Meta looking at this forum, I can confirm that they don't.. This is a user forum only.

  • Thanks for your response Maccyb123. It's interesting that you say this is not a general problem because the consensus from a Gemini query seems to be that this is very common.

If the headset is older and you think that the battery needs to be replaced, can you provide me with a link that gives instructions on how to replace the battery?

As a follow up,  I actually have a battery head strap which is great and extends the usage time, however even with that connected, if I leave the quest 2 in sleep mode, it will draw all the charge out of the head strap battery in one day. The head strap battery is brand new (arrived 2 days ago). My device was factory reset 2 weeks ago.

slseed Thanks for the message! "Very common" is a relative term. OK, as headsets, just like mobile phones,, tablets, etc are used, they will eventually have a battery that will exhaust its recharge cycles and will have less power, and eventually die.  A battery headstrap that is constantly charging a battery will also reduce the life of the battery itself, it will be exhausted even faster. As you say you have factory reset so it does look like your battery is at an end of life situation. As for changing the battery itself., check YouTube, there are videos with instructions on doing it, though it's not so easy, if you have the tools and skills you can do it. You could also try to find a third party repairer in your country who can fix it safely for you. If you are in the US there is a company called Fix My Oculus who has an excellent reputation. You can even check out their YouTube channel as there are instructional videos on this if you have the skills to do it yourself. What is really annoying to a large extent is that people are replacing whole headsets because these companies are not allowing user replaceable batteries as there used to be on mobile phones. With all the environmental legislation, I'm surprised that easily swapping a battery isn't a requirement for all devices, phones and headsets. They purposely make it difficult for us to keep our headsets running. Even mobile companies are glueing the battery into the case to make it more difficult. Anyway, that's another subject I suppose. I suppose you could continue also to use the headstrap all the time while playing. I have seen reports of the battery headsets themselves contributing to fast drain. It's very difficult to pin down a cause.  If you can get a new battery, go for it. Much better than buying a whole new headset. Best wishes my friend! Sorry for bringing up my annoyance at the lack of customer replaceable batteries! 🙂

I totally agree with your frustration about user replaceable batteries. It's especially difficult with phones. I'm fairly handy with electronics and will look up some videos to see how difficult it is to swap the battery. I don't want to risk damaging the headset. Thanks for the tips. I know that constant charging is not good for lithium batteries so I have my head strap battery turned off when  I'm not using it.
