Latest new update to version 83 causing continual Crashing

Has anyone else with a Quest 2 found that the latest update, going from version 81 to version 83, leaves the device crashing continually now?  Ever since the update along with also updating the Worlds app, the device won't stay up for more than a single minute no matter what I've tried doing before it suddenly goes black without any messages, shutting itself off completely each time!  It feels very warm and I'm wondering if either of these updates might be causing it to overheat and shut off?  Or perhaps it's just a bad update from either of these that doesn't work right on the Quest 2 device?  I'd also, in case it MIGHT be connected, made just one other change at the time BEFORE the Worlds update, this being that of switching my environment selection to the "Bloomhouse" selection on the far right as its virtual environment, replacing the default Horizon environment.  But it has to be one or more of these 3 things causing it to continually shut itself off now after about 60 seconds each time, which of course is no good!  I see they have a way to sideload the prior operating system (version 81) apparently, but I can't do that anytime soon at least because I don't have the money to buy a computer beyond my Window 8 (not even 8.1) computer, with Meta's software allegedly NOT supporting Windows 8 so probably not even being installable on my computer for the sideloading!  So I might be STUCK with no longer being able to use my Quest 2 device any longer.  So any feedback is appreciated, and I am NOT willing to do a Factory Reset.  But I AM interested in knowing how many other people this might be happening to.  Luckily, I also have a 2nd Quest 2 device as well, which I definitely now won't be installing this latest version 83 operating system on NOR will I be the latest Worlds update either (even though the Bloomhouse has been running okay on it, which I'd installed about a week ago on THIS device), now that I know that either one of these updates or some combination of them will RUIN the device!  Thanks.

  • Surprisingly, I just tried my device again that a couple days ago I had had the original issue with as mentioned above, and it was now working just fine, although I admit to not going into Horizon worlds this time, which admittedly last time I had gone into and had a lot of problems with, which might have been what created the whole issue even though it was lasting through resets at the time, which is odd! So my thinking now as to why it was working just now without any problems is because it had probably overheated before because it felt really hot! However, it never gave any warning messages about it overheating back then during the above, but just simply was going black and turning itself off consistently repeatedly after the first minute of being reset. So I'm now hoping that the problem with it was simply overheating caused by going into Meta Worlds because that app keeps dying on me lately, so I'm going to stop going into it! I also noticed that they've got another operating system update with it being the same version but apparently some changes to it, although they don't mention what the changes are, but I'm kind of afraid to load it now though. I think I'll only load it if I start having additional problems with the device again. So, I was proven correct with it being so much smarter not to immediately jump to the conclusion that you should do a factory reset like so many people out there believe in doing!

I'm having problems too... I did the latest update on my Oculus Quest 2 today and now my headset will not work at all. It continually keeps glitching on and off as if it's trying to find the boundary and the controllers just keep buzzing. I did a soft reset...A sideload update...and a complete factory reset. It still just keeps coming on for a second and then goes off. Controllers still buzzing and i can see the two hands holding the controllers for a second before the screen disappears again, repeatedly.  I was on live chat with Meta and they are trying to sell me a refurbished oculus.  There was absolutely nothing wrong with the headset until the restart after the update.

  • I am NOT willing to do a Factory Reset

Why not? That's probably your only solution. You won't lose any purchases as long as you use the same account, but you'll have to re-download your purchased apps. Your saved games will be accessible from the Cloud Backups.

    • For one darn good reason, I only do this through a phone plan, my not having enough data allowed to me to reload all of my apps back onto it again, it being a 128 GB device.  Plus, there are other practical reasons as well that deal with not being able to easily keep it powered for long in my situation.

OK, DON'T do a factory research and you can keep complaining about the problem you can probably fix with a factory reset. Good move. 🤔🤪

Well, irritating troll, I didn't POST this to "complain"!  As I made clear, I posted this merely to find out if it either already is or wil be happening to other people as time goes by, which is of course smart so that I can eventually find out more about where I stand with the situation.  Too bad you weren't smart enough to have thought of that yourself.

  • That's too bad.  Sorry that's happened to you.  I had all types of problems with my first device as well and no longer have that one.

  • Problems here as well, link is just broken and crashes soon after connecting since update.

Yet strangely it does not crash using Virtual Desktop? If I exit VD I can then connect just fine on link with SteamVR but not Quest VR it will crash. I have no explanation except this is not the first update from META to go wrong and the last time I did a factory reset it was a nightmare to get going again because the Quest 2 would not recognize my account.

Perhaps META hopes people will think their headset is broken and buy a new one for Christmas. I just don't understand why so often their updates are a mess.

Hi Mike.  Sorry that you also are having problems with yours as well.  I don't have the Virtual Desktop, unfortunately, and only have access in standalone mode on my Quest 2 device.  Plus, these people that suggest a factory reset don't really seem to get it.  Specifically, the moment that I'd go to update it to the latest version again, it would likely have the same exact problem!  Plus, I have enough time (about 60 seconds) to initiate a NEW system update as it stands now that might FIX the trouble, and without my having to do anything but just wait for the next one to come out!  In the mean time, I can use my alternate Quest2 device that's only 64 GB in size, simply being sure not to let it update to the latest new operating system version.  So I think people that jump instantly to the "just factory reset it rather than complaining about it" are basically being foolish for the most part.  I'm a registered developer, and I know that jumping to time consuming "solutions" such as factory resets is basically stupid in most case regardless of WHAT customer service might say or write about it.  It should ONLY ever be used as a LAST RESORT as to what I've learned about computer type devices over my lengthy career with them.  Anyway, thanks for the feedback, and I hope it won't be too long before they come out with a fixed new version, because I wouldn't even be able to afford a new device anytime soon, and their probably going to see sales start dropping anyway with their announcement that they're moving away from developing VR devices into instead AR now, meaning that the life of the Quest systems is probably quite limited now and it wouldn't even seem to too much sense for registered developers like me to even think about trying to write further apps for it.  :(

  • Hi! I have a quest 2 and im having this exact issue. Factory reset wont help btw

Link started working again today after headset did a short update, I don't know for what. It is still sometimes having to take a couple tries to work but once it does the connection is stable. I just expect META to do better with their updates than have their customers spend time trying to figure out if there is a problem with their hardware.

I spent some time with virtual desktop which I haven't tried in a couple years and it seems greatly improved, still tweaking but pretty close to link performance with a dedicated wifi 6 connection.

I might just give up on using link for all the hassels that come with it.
