LEDs are off when charging Quest 3 with Elite strap - is it normal after latest updates?

I had a few months break from VR. Lately I started using my Quest 3 again and after all updates, I noticed that now LEDs on Quest 3 and Elite strap stay off when charging. Is this a new bug or stupid feature? A few months back LEDs on Quest and strap were orange while charging and green when charging is finished. Now only option to see charging status is to press power button and look on Quest display. Do anyone has this issue or am I alone with it?

  • szerwony Ya, I have also seen this issue with my Q3 Elite battery strap since v78/79 non-ptc updates.  As a workaround I've found I need to discard the Elite battery below 50% before fully powering down my Q3.  Then put it on charge for a few hours (until my strap battery led is green).  After that both batteries seem to reach 100% again.  I'm pretty sure this is a firmware issue caused by moving to Android 14.  So, hopefully will be fixed in the near future.  I have filed a number of bug reports on this issue, and I suggest you do the same mate.  Cheers.

I already contacted support and their response sound like it's supposed behaviour. Seriously, what a stupid change.

A similar thing happened with my Q2 Elite battery strap quite a while ago (again, after an Android OS update).  This did eventually get fixed, so hopefully this will be the same with our Q3's.  Cheers.

I've had my Quest 3 for about 5 months. It is on v81.1034. When charging, with the Elite Strap/Battery connected to the headset, and the charging cable plugged in to the external battery, the LED on the headset stays on but the LED on the external battery only comes on for a few seconds after I plug in the cable. If I press the button on the external battery, the LED comes on for about 5 seconds only. The LED on the headset itself only turns green when BOTH batteries are fully charged (I think). As far as I know, the LEDS have worked like this since day one. Both batteries are charging fine.

Lucky you, you weren't chosen by Meta to experience this bug! However, in the past both LEDs on Quest and the Elite Strap were on during charge, not only the one in headset.

I've had my headset and Elite strap for 5 months and don't recall the Elite battery LED ever staying on for more that 5 seconds.

  • I can add to that. I experienced it but in a different way. Yesterday, when I attached the cable directly to the headset I got no orange light even though it was charging normally and it went green when fully charged. Today the orange light is showing again. I think it's a definitely a software glitch caused by the updates.

So far after a break I used Quest only two times and if I remember correctly, LEDs went green when fully charged but only after first use. Now when I used it second time, LEDs were off even when fully charged.

Yes, you're right, it should be orange while charging and green when charged. Probably a glitch caused by v81 update is the issue. I suppose the important thing is the headsets are still being charged. Hopefully an update will fix the glitch. Mine seemed to fix itself without an update so we'll see.

  • I’ve only had the Q3 with the strap/battery for 3 days.  The first charge and setup went fine, and it seems to be working ok, but when I hook up the charger (to the strap battery), the led on the headset glows orange but the led on the battery glow orange for a short period.  I’m not sure if it’s charging correctly or not.  Crossing my fingers it’s charging.  And  one last question, there’s a button next to the charge port on the strap/battery that I can’t find what it does… Anyone know?

In the past this button was used to turn off the battery strap, so it doesn't self discharge in a few hours when Quest is not used. But after updates turning off the strap also doesn't work, so I just unplug it from headset after it finishes charging.

Btw welocome to Meta world. Now your life will be filled with many different and irritating bugs.

szerwony  I just got non-ptc v81.1034 yesterday on my Q3/512Gb headset and now the Q3 Elite battery strap button no longer seems to do anything.

Also, still no coordinated charging with headset led indicator.  I seem to need to charge it connected until the battery pack shows a green light.  Then disconnect the strap cable and charge up the headset battery separately until it shows a green light.

Meta really needs to fix this asap imho.  In the meantime all we can do is continue to submit bug reports I guess, lol!  Cheers.

Twangmaster  A very little googling and you'll find the meta support article on what the strap battery button is supposed to do.  I got non-ptc v81.1034 yesterday and now the button does not seem to do anything except the strap battery does seem to show its charge level ok.

The following table lists the different functions of the button on top of the Elite strap with battery.

      FunctionActionResult
Power offPress and hold for 5-8 seconds (LED solid green until button has been released) when headset is powered on and connected to strap.Elite strap with battery will power off and will not charge the headset until the button is pressed again or an approved wall adapter is connected to the strap.
ResetPress and hold for more than 12 seconds. To reset the strap when it's not working properly.
Power onShort press button once.sower on or wake up Elite strap with battery.

Note: The strap LED does not turn on when powering up.

Check battery levelPress button once when strap is active.
      • Low (< 20%): Blinks orange LED 5 times.
      • Mid (21%-99%): Solid orange LED for 5 seconds.
      • Full (>99%): Solid green LED for 5 seconds.

Note: The strap LED does not stay on while charging.

The "power on" and "check battery level" instructions are identical. The LED always comes on for 5 seconds after a brief press.

To reset, while no LED is on, press and hold the button until the LED turns green. Keep holding the button until the green LED goes off and release the button immediately. In v79 I always had to do this after powering off the Q3 to get it to recognize the Elite battery in the power display in the eyepiece. In v81, the headset seems to consistently recognize the Elite battery automatically.

I disagree that the green LED means that the headset is powered off! That is rather counter-intuitive.

If my Elite battery has good charge and I press and hold the button for about 20 seconds (i.e. keep holding the button after the green LED goes out) it will flash orange about 5 times... I have no idea what that setting is for, unless that is actually powering off the Elite battery.

I am on v81.1034 build 5131230.23000.520 not PTC.

3 months later and the issue is still there... how hard can it be to repair goddamn charging light light?

Fingers crossed for Steam Frame. Hope we could finally throw our Quests into trash and switch to something good.

Whaah, the LED doesn't stay on. It's the end of the world! Some people are so neurotic🤷‍♂️

If it was the only problem with Quest, probably I could live with it. But when you sum hundreds of problems that Meta has with this device, then it's really frustrating.

We? Who's we? I'm not throwing mine out, it's great!! 😂. While it's definitely far from perfect, and the Steam Frame might be great particularly for PCVR users, for standalone players like me, can't beat the Quest despite it's flaws. And I would not be assuming any particular product is somehow going to be the perfect bug free experience. Nobody has the frame. It could be an even bigger buggy mess,, who knows? If the Valve Index is anything to go by, the frame will be a nightmare. Check out the thousands of complaints about it on Reddit even after 6 years . Add to that the Frame will be new, could well be worse again.

This is a really annoying bug. I really just want to glance at the headset to see if it's charging and fully charged.
