Meta 3S not booting

Hi, I'll try to keep this as succinct as I can. This morning my son complains the controllers aren't working on the Meta 3S. moving the controllers or pulling the triggers does nothing, but if I hold the meta button in one controller I do get the meta symbol with the loading circle around it, and the meta app shows the controllers as connected. So:

  • I tried rebooting the headset - no change
  • tried changing batteries in the controllers, and leaving batteries out for 30 seconds - no change
  • Using power button + Volume down button I called up the boot menu and factory reset the headset
  • Now when I turn the headset on I get the meta logo, followed by spinning meta logo, followed by passthrough mode view of the room I'm in for about one second, then it switches to a black screen.

While the screen is black the two controllers vibrate every few seconds. If I hold in the power button I can bring the power menu up, I can adjust volume on the headset. Pressing buttons on the controllers only causes the controllers to vibrate, can't get them to interact with the headset, even holding the meta button does nothing now.

On the meta app it says the headset and both controllers are connected, can't look any further as getting into settings requires entering a link code form the headset screen and I can't see one.

At this point I suspect it's time to contact support for a repair or a warranty replacement or something. Thought I would post here first in case I'm missing a trick

  • Ok, there's just one thing you haven't tried and it might fix it. Connect your headset to your pc and do the Meta software tool update over the computer. It can fix things like this. Good luck ! Let's know if it helps.

If you like just search Meta Software tool in your pc browser and it will come up first on the list.

Thankyou! Did as you suggested and sideloaded the software. On reboot I got the same meta loading - flash of passthrough mode - black screen. But then I held in the meta button for about 10 seconds, got a white loading circle then the whole thing came to life and I got the setup screen with both controllers working, reconnected my account skipped the tutorials and now everything is working again.

Now is that because of the sideloading tool you showed me? or would holding the meta button in for 10 seconds have got me off the black screen this whole time? I can't possibly say but I'm choosing to give you the credit for fixing it. So thanks again, I hope your crops are bountiful and you get everything you wanted for Christmas.

Thanks a lot ! You're very welcome. It's probable that a combination of the two did the trick. The software tool is great at ironing out bugs. Very happy for you and your son ! Enjoy the experience ! Another bit of advice I'm sure you know anyway. If you want to keep everything stable, stay away from the Public Test Channel program. Stick to the official updates. I want a Porsche for Christmas, but there's not much chance of that happening 😂😂
