Meta quest 2 profiles not loading and repeated app not responding and shell messages

Started to have lots of problems with our meta Quest 2. First problem was some of the profiles won’t load, it just stays grey screen. Pressing power button gets the switch profile box back up but if you press continue it just goes back to grey screen.

2 of the 4 profiles work, but there are repeated oculus not responding messages appear. Sometimes there are app not responding and shell error messages.

I have tried all types of reset, short of full factory reset. The problem seemed to start when a new game was downloaded but the memory was full. Memory space has been created, over 40gb. But still stuck with the problem.

Is there anything else I can try before a factory reset?

    Hi TyphFGR4,

Thank you for contacting us about the issues you're experiencing with your Quest 2. We understand that the failure to load two of your profiles, the grey screen, and the app malfunctions are impacting your VR experience, therefore, we'd like to provide some troubleshooting steps to help you.

We understand you've already tried resetting the headset and cleared storage, thanks for that. It seems the issue is recent and appeared after a new game was downloaded so the first thing we would like to check is that your Quest 2 is running the latest version of the software. Please also check the Meta Quest Link app is up to date.

Next, remove any third-party accessories and fully charge the headset before resetting your headset again:

    • Hold down the power and volume down buttons for at least 10 seconds, or until boot screen loads on the headset.
    • Use volume buttons to scroll to Boot device and select it using the power button.

If these issues persist. please send us a private message so we can further investigate:

    • Please select our name to get to our profile page, or click here
    • Next, click "Send a Message" to privately message us!

Please remember, you must be signed into the community first to send us a private message.

    Thanks.

  • Software is up to date and I don’t have 3rd party accessories. The only thing I have not tried yet is a reboot when fully charged so will try that next.

      Thanks for your prompt response.

Please try fully charging then rebooting and keep us updated.

If this doesn't fix the issue, please send us a private message for further investigation.

      Thanks.

Rebooting from boot while fully charged made no difference.  Exactly the same situation.

On the profiles that do work I get the following error messages:

Oculus isn’t responding. Meta Horizon Shell isn’t responding. Oculus assistant service isn’t responding.

  • In case anyone is reading this post with similar issues. I was unable to resolve it without doing a factory reset. I have now done that and it’s back to working normally.

  • Memory space has been created, over 40gb.

That is not "memory space", it is storage space. Huge difference.

Ok fair point. Is there something else you think I should have done?

I think factory reset was the only solution. Quest 2 headsets in particular seem to be having a lot of problems due to "low memory". The v81 update is supposed to have made a lot of memory optimizations but actually seems to have made the problem worse 😒.
