Meta Quest 3 boots then black screen

80+% of the time when I boot my quest 3 after the meta logo it goes to a black/blank screen but I can hear the sounds of the system working.

After much research I have found this is caused by the face sensor not seeing me.

When I remove the mask it works just fine. Put it back on and nothing.

If I move the headset so the mask is being pushed up by my forehead it works but this is very uncomfortable and clearly not how it was intended to be used.

I have attempted to find a way to talk to someone from support but that doesn't exist because profits over people.

Found a reddit post about this issue and the solution is getting a white face mask.

After spending $500 on this device Meta should be footing the bill for fixing their design flaw.

Make there be a setting to turn off the need for the face sensor to wake up the device, let us just hit the power button, or press the Meta button on the remotes, or use the ever listening AI to tell it to wakeup and ignore that sensor.

Use some of those billions of dollars you have to do some good in the world for a change, or, at the very least, make your overpriced products work properly.

Just get a cheap adjustable facial interface and dial it in to the closest setting to your face.

Enable developer mode (you'll need to create a developer account). I'm pretty sure that there is a Developer Mode setting to disable the proximity sensor.

Alternatively, on the rare occasion I see a black screen when I take off the headset and put it back on. Simply pressing the sleep button briefly, then pressing it again to wake the headset works every time.

I will give that a shot, thank you for that info.

I've tried taking it off and putting it back on multiple times, doesn't change anything. Adjusting the headband to be very tight so it's uncomfortable also works.

Still rather annoying that one must jump through so many hoops to find a work around for these issues.

Hi there BigredWookie82. We understand you are having an issue with your Meta Quest 3 stuck in black screen after booting up and you were unable to get through to a support agent for help. This is not the experience we want our customers to have and we want to know more about the issue you are facing.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps which you a try to see of this resolves the issue:

        • Ensure the headset is powered on (check if the power LED is on)
        • If there appears to be no power, attempt to charge the headset for 2 hours.
        • Remove any unsupported third-party accessories that may affect boot (such as external battery packs, accessories that plug into the USB-C port, etc.)
        • Hard Reboot the headset

                        * Hold down the power button and volume down button for 30 seconds until you hear the boot-up sound

                        * If the boot-up sound is not heard:

                                   * Hold the power and volume (-) button down simultaneously until the boot screen loads on your headset.

                                   * Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight "Boot Device" and press the power button.

                                   * Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.

You can also try to use the Software update Tool to manually update your device to see if this resolves the issue.

If that doesn't work then you can try to Factory Reset the device as a last resort.
