Meta Quest Remote Desktop.exe crashing in background

I am seeing the same thing.  The windows event viewer shows that RemoteDesktopHelper.exe is crashing over and over again.  Aside from the background system churn, this also causes window focus to go in and out every time it restarts, which is extremely disruptive.

Hoping this gets fixed next update since it seems to be happening quite a bit

Edit: Deleting 'RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe' from Program Files/Oculus/Support/oculus-remote-desktop seems to have fixed this for me (if a different error is now shown instead, go to settings, beta, then restart, restarting with task manager might work as well.)

Same problem here since an automatic update this morning.

The mouse pointer is constantly flickering, ovrserver_x64.exe permanently uses 20% of my CPU, RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe causes new crash dumps every second. I stopped the “Oculus VR Runtime Service”, which solved the problem for the moment.

Hope there will be a solution soon...

Since the last update from yesterday I am also getting problems with this file :
C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-remote-desktop\RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe

It breaks my "wait chain" and prevents some of my other programs from running properly...

If i end task in the task manager, just like a virus, it auto restarts immediately... and since the file is always in use, i cannot delete it either...

By stopping the "OVRService" the RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe automatically stopped and was removed from the running processes... and the problem was immediately fixed.

Yeah but... isn't that file and service actually used for something??

Shouldn't they ... like... FIX the problem instead of just having user delete a problematic file? 🙂

I am not quite certain what that file or service actually do either... I have not yet tested my Q3 headset since yesterday update and will do so in about 30mins 😉

Looks like you were right that it is not used to connect with the usbc cable 🙂
I stopped the service, renamed the file so the bug stops occuring, and was still able to load up the meta quest link program on windows, connect with the quest link, access my desktop and load up my beat saber from steam 🙂
So I guess its a super weird bug that causes conflicts that they introduced with one of the latest update...
At least removing that file does not seem to affect anything so far after a few hours of use 🙂

Just chiming in to say I have the exact same problem relating to RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe. The software appears to have been modified on 06/11/24, which is about when I recall the issue started, so must be related to the latest update.

My cursor constantly has a spinning circle and in Task Manager I can see OVRServer_x64.exe permanently using about 25% of my CPU. If I end the task, the spinning circle stops immediately, but OVRServer_64.exe just restarts itself 5 seconds later and back to square one.

Does anyone from Meta actively check these forums? It's getting really annoying. I tried to open a support ticket, but didn't get very far as my serial number wasn't recognised, even though I copied it directly from the Oculus / Meta desktop app. Maybe it's too old and they don't support the Rift CV1 anymore, I don't know....

I've contacted Meta support and had a nice chat, just waiting for the email to come through so I can send the log but it seems like they're going to pass it on to the developers so it can get fixed.

Are there any news? I having issues with the service too and have to stop it, because RemoteDesktopCompanion.exe is causing permanent Application Error in windows log and keeps the computer busy.

be careful, friends, I advise you to uninstall Oculus while waiting for this to be resolved because I identified a problem with other applications, notably ea game, the application was crashing and with fewer options on the screen, I the same things as you the blinking mouse and the companion.exe file etc...
