My headset is stuck in a boot loop - Quest 2

Hi guys,

My quest 2 has been working perfectly since i got in on 22nd of october. Now suddenly it will not boot up anymore. When I turn it on, it shows the oculus logo, stays there for a few seconds, then shuts down for a few seconds, and then shows the logo again, shuts down, logo, shuts down.... The only way I can really stop this, is by acessing the usb update menu on one of the loops and selecting "Power off".

I have tried all the options and they do nothing. If I select "boot device", it starts the boot loop again as before. The same thing happens if I select "factory reset". Once I confirm that i want to factory reset it, it just goes back into the boot loop, and nothing else happens. So yes, i did try to factory reset it, but it just doesnt work.

Any ideas and tips would be greatly apreciated.

  • I have solved the issue. For everyone who stumbles over this post in the future, here is what I did:

I was looking for solutions online, and i found someone who had a very similar problem on youtube. He said his led indicator was also shining blue, not white, and lo and behold, mine was also blueish when it was on. Aparently he just left it looping for like 10 minutes and it suddenly worked again.

Anyway, here is the video: *(ok, aparently i cant post links for some reason, thanks FB, really makes it easiser to help people (like you should be doing actually). The video is titled "Oculus Quest 2 stuck on boot - Fixed (No factory reset)" on youtube if you want to take a gander.)

It wasnt quite as simple with mine tho. I turned it on and left it, and after about 20 minutes it was still looping. I did not plug it in, my reasoning being, it will either boot, or drain the battery completely eventually. So I left it on, and went to work.

After about 2 hours I came back, and noticed that while it still seemed to be looping, the timing was different, and it was making the sounds it makes when it boots normaly. So I tried turning it off with the power button (which didnt work before, i had to use the boot menu to turn it off), and it worked!

Then I turned it back on, and it SOUNDED like it booted up, the screen also turned on, but it was only showing black. It was definetly on tho, since it kept making sounds it does when you wave the controlers around, the screen was glowing (the "black glow" of an lcd that is on but showing nothing). So I turned it off and on a few times, and it was still the same.

After a few tried, I decided to just try the factory reset again, and lo and behold, it worked again! The screen came on during the factory reset, showing that its erasing everything, and then it booted up normaly. I had to go trough the initial guide and setup again, and the headset then updated itself and the controlers, and it has been working fine since then. I had to re-pair it with my oculus app on my phone, but I didnt have to log in with my facebook account, it was already connected. I reinstalled the games, and its been working just fine. I took it to work to see if it will die on me again, if I take it from its home, but it worked fine there as well. I just makde sure to turn off the guardian before hand, since aparently that can mess it up.

Anyway, the issue seems to have been solved. I hate that it was solved like this, i much prefer clear cut solutions than randomly turning stuff off and on, but here we are nonetheless. I hope this helps someone in the future.

  • I got my Quest 2 replaced by a refurbished under warranty.  Everything is good now except the refurbished Quest 2 battery is much weaker then the replaced one.  It hardly last 50 minutes and takes longer to charge.  I little dissapointed.

That sucks.  That's what started my whole issue.  I bought it used and the battery wouldn't hold a charge.  I ordered a new battery and replaced the old one.  Now it boot loops.

I would think that the refurbished one is under warranty?

It obviously did not get a new battery when they refurbished it(I would expect that to be part of a standard refurbishing).  Tell them you want to warranty the one they sent you. They should have at least tested the battery health.

Hi there, exoxd87! We certainly want to make sure your first day VR gaming with your new headset runs smoothly, so we popped in to help out! For some clarification to start with, we do want to ask, is there an LED light on your headset when it is plugged up to charge? How long has the headset been left on charge for? And, so we don't repeat any, what troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

  • Getting this boot loop as well. No light when plugged into chargers (I tried many). Just screen turns on for less then a second and turns off again. I can't factory reset using the hard buttons or app due to it restarting to quickly. I got one good session out of it and hadn't used it in awhile and figured I'd dust it off and try again. Now I'm stuck wondering why I bought the thing to begin with. I've tried all the suggestions given here and on reddit. Am I just wasting my time trying to get this work?

  • Mine just behaves casually. Nothing suspicious nor interesting, just a bootloop. I've tried factory reset, changing boot disks, updating firmware via web and even with sdk, but nothing helps. Where do I even start fixing such problem?
