That's not good. Although I haven't tried them, here is a link (below) to information on accessibility options for the Quest, including visual impairment. Not sure if helps but good luck. It might have been a good idea to go to a store and try out a demo model to see if it suits your needs. As for leaning in to get closer to a window, it can go grey if you are moving outside of the set boundary.

No, it's not a boundary issue, I can reproduce it if I pull the menu bar very close to me:

Yes, this exactly. It's so frustrating because it goes white just as I'm starting to be able to read or see things. I wish there was at least the option to disable this behaviour.

You could report it as an issue in the headset: Quick Settings->Report Problem
Maybe capture a screenshot of the grey menu first. You can take screenshots by briefly pressing the Meta menu on the right controller and at the same time quickly squeezing and releasing the grip button. In the "Help & Tips" app in your headset library, there is a tutorial "Using camera shortcuts" that shows you how.
