Quest 2 Black Screen with sound and UI

Hello everyone,

I’m having an issue with my Meta Quest 2: when I turn them on, the Meta logo appears normally, then the tutorial starts, but after a few seconds the screen goes completely black. This happens both in the headset and when casting to my phone.

Interestingly, I can see the volume icon when I press the volume up or down buttons, and the recovery/boot menu works and is visible correctly. Audio also responds to the buttons. This indicates that the operating system is active, but the main graphical interface fails to load.

Steps I’ve already tried to fix it:

Factory Reset multiple times → did not solve the issue.
Firmware reinstallation via Meta → also did not work.
Full 10-hour charge with the original charger → no effect.
Covering the proximity sensor to rule out the headset thinking it’s not on my head → no change.
Casting to phone → the screen is also black.
Verified that the volume and sound overlay works correctly → system responds, only the main interface is not displayed.

Other important details:

The screen works in recovery/BIOS mode, so it’s not a panel issue.
The issue started after not using it for months

Unfortunately, this sounds like it could be a dodgy proximity sensor or camera. Are you able to get the cast function working using the mobile app?

No, the cast only shows black and the volume UI; it looks the same as on the Quest.

If you have a developer account, can you install the MQDH software and use the disable proximity sensor option. This may indicate a sensor fault.

  • I think I’m having the same issue. I turn on my headset, gets the intro logo then goes dark. I can cast but all dark. My controllers are vibrating about every five seconds as well. I tried restarting, factory reset, changing batteries, unpairing and repairing. Still nothing

I got mine fixed in the strangest way! I tried all the suggestions here including upgrading my firmware using the online update tool on Meta's website, factory resetting, etc, and nothing worked.

I took off the faceplate to clean the proximity sensor, and the screens came back to life as soon as I cleaned it (or so i thought)! I was able to navigate the menus and use it normally while the faceplate was off. I thought cleaning the proximity sensor was the fix, so I put the faceplate back on. But the screens went black again and the headset became unusable as soon I put the faceplate back on. Took the faceplate off, and it was usable again.

I am using a VRCover third party faceplate with their own padding, and the padding has become old and saggy. I noticed it kind of encroaching on the proximity sensor a bit so I switched the faceplate back to the original Quest 2 faceplate. This fixed the issue permanently! My Quest 2 has been fine ever since!!!

I'm sure I can reseat the padding on the VRCover faceplate to make sure it's not blocking the proximity sensor, but the padding is deteriorating so much that pieces of it end up on my face when I wear it. I'll stick with the OEM faceplate for now.

I hope this helps some of you out there!!! I was ready to give up and get a new headset!

TL;DR - it might be your faceplate and padding. take off the faceplate, and see if your screens work as they should. Replace faceplate/padding if necessary!
