Quest 3 battery is charging too slow and draining too fast

Hello support team and other quest 3 users!

Background story: I have owned my quest 3 for probably a year and more now, I'm using BOBOVR2 with a fancy extended battery strap, and I always used it every time I use the Quest 3 because it extends the battery by a large amount. I barely charge my Quest 3 because I rarely got it to 0% while using it because of the extended battery (sometimes probably 40% if the battery died). Last night, it is the first time in probably months that the Quest 3 reaches 0% battery and shuts down (It happened because i didn't plug my battery extension).

SO what I did is, I charged it with a 67 W charger (which I always used). I waited for almost 4 hours and suddenly, the LED light changed from "charging mode" (orange) to "low battery mode" (flashing red), WHILE charger is plugged in. I checked the battery status by pressing the power button and it shows a empty battery with a charge indicator on it (which is 0%). Not knowing what to do after searching a lot of forums, I left it to charge for a couple more minutes. It reached 1% after 20-ish minutes, and reaches 2% after 20-ish minutes too, so I left it and went to bed. This morning, the quest 3 battery is 51% (I slept for around 8 hours), which is crazy. I tried turning it on unplugged to test the battery, and it was draining super fast, like 1% per 20 seconds, I tried booting the device and power off (using power off button and volume down). It still doesn't work. Chat, is my quest 3 battery cooked?

It happened so suddenly too, and coincidentally (could be) after an update 3 days ago...

I tried charging it again today with my 67 W charger and it charged fine. I do not know where the problem was, but it could be because of the battery in Quest 3 not being charged with a high watt charger for such a long time. It is fixed for now!

It is has charged to 53% a few hours ago after I booted the device, it has dropped to 52% after an hour of charging (Yes, it was plugged while the battery drained 1%😪)

      UPDATE V2

I charged it using the extended battery and voila, the charging works as intended (?????) for some reason the issue is in the 67 W charger????? I need further explanation for this because it is recently happening, I charged my other devices like phones and it worked fine.

      (EDIT)

It still does not work using the 67 W charger. The charging works by plugging a lower watt charger such as 5W and 15W (my third-party strap extended battery)

Glad you got it fixed ! I'm not an expert but I wonder did the headset recognize the higher capacity charger and throttled it to prevent perceived damage ?

leave it charging as long as you can and update using the meta update tool or factory reset the headset as a recent borkdate has caused many charging issues.

It could be the recent updates, I haven't read the patch yet.

I noticed that when I left the quest to charge with a high watt charger (67W) it drops 1% every 10-ish minutes. But it works with lower adapter chargers like 5W and 15W

      Hey Wendygdev.

Having power issues is not the experience we want for our customers, let me see what we can do.

We can only guarantee you compatibility with official Quest chargers and battery packs, however we have some troubleshooting issues for you to try.

      1. Attempt to charge the headset for 2 hours.
      2. When used, Quest 3 will consume power faster than it can charge. The headset must be left powered off or in a sleep state during charging.
      3. Computer USB ports will not provide sufficient power to charge the Quest 3, resulting in a very slow charge or failure to charge at all. The headset must be connected to a wall outlet using the provided power adapter
      4. If you have another Quest 3 power adapter (such as from a second headset) can you try the other power adapter.
      5. If a known good Cable or Charger resolves the issue, no further troubleshooting is required.
      6. Are you using a facial interface accessory? If so, can you attempt to charge the headset again without the facial interface accessory. Some facial interfaces may block the proximity sensor which can impact the power of the headset.
      7. Are you using the Elite Strap with Battery or any third-party accessories? If so, can you disconnect the Elite Strap with Battery or any third-party accessories and try charging the headset again.
      8. Try charging from a different source (another wall outlet), preferably one on a different circuit.
      9. If using a splitter, power bar, or extension cord try removing it and plug directly into the wall outlet.
      10. See if the headset will load the boot screen and then exit out:
      11. Hold the power and volume (-) buttons on the headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads.
      12. Exit and reboot the headset.

Just give these steps a try and see how we go, after this we can try other things.

Hello support! Thank you for the many many solution you gave me!

The problem is in the power Watt of the adapter (?), I've tried other extension cords, multiple cables, and it finally charges normally with a 5 W adapter and a 15 W battery extension from a third-party strap.

I don't know why but my quest suddenly denies my 67 W adapter, it wasn't like this before.. My current fix is just use the lower adapter to charge the Quest

That's great !😁 Battery charging is always a bit of a mystery ! ,lol. Might it have been the wall socket you used. And you know those extension cords, the outlets of those are often of lower power than plugging directly into the wall socket itself. Anyway, I'm glad you can use the fast charger !

I agree! Anything could be possible, I'm just glad it worked fine in the end. It's probably related to using an external battery charger while using the VR.
