Quest Pro screen too dark in PCVR

I have had a Pro since release.  It has always had a very dark screen, one of the selling points was the display quality meant that blacks were more black.  However, many PCVR games are simply too dark in dark areas to see anything at all, I mean I cannot see the ground of anything in front of me.  I have the settings in the headset and in game up to maximum and it's still so dark that I have stopped using the Pro at all.  I'm talking about Skyrim VR, Fallout VR, Half Life Alyx, Metro VR etc.  I have not used it for a few months - although I have it docked all the time and the software for both the PC and headset are the latest.  If there is not a secret setting or hack that can be used I will just have to abandon it.

Anyone any ideas - I have light blockers for the headset and it is working perfectly - never been used outside, never had any light damage to the headset.  But still I cannot use it.

PaulusW Can I ask you, my friend and it is because I have a brother who has developed an ocular issue. He could not make out objects in a dark environment and it caused him problems, even driving at night became impossible for him. All other sight is perfect except for dark images and backgrounds. Sight is a very individual thing. How are you doing in dark places normally? Also ask some others to look at the games and see if they have a problem or not seeing the dark areas. I wouldn't have thought of this if it wasn't for my brother. It could well be a device issue though I haven't seen complaints about this issue before. Just a thought. I would definitely try to get someone to compare what they see with what you see.

  • Thank you for your reply.  No my eyesight is fine (in fact I had a routine eye test this week and all was great).  I play lot's of pancake games and use my PC for loads of other things like 3d printing, writing etc.  I also use an iPad without difficulty - it is definitely the screen which is very dark in dark areas.

That's great. Sorry, it was just an improbable possibility I thought of. πŸ™‚ I'm wondering now if it's a hardware issue. I hope you get it resolved. It must be very frustrating not to be able to see the game correctly.

LCD panels tend to lose brightness as they age. I don't know if Quest Pro has the same settings as a Quest 3, but my Q3 has several settings that affects screen brightness:

    Settings>Display & brightness>Display brightness

    Settings>Display & brightness>Adaptive lighting

    Settings>Experimental>Temporal Dimming

    Settings>Experimental>Content adaptive brightness

    Accessibility>Vision>Contrast

The other thing that could affect brightness is battery saver mode.

The PCVR games themselves often have gamma correction and brightness sliders.
