Slow charging on Meta Quest 3

The first times I charged the Meta Quest 3, it charged quickly. I've heard about 2 hours for full charge, and quicker of course in the beginning. That seems on-par with my experience.

But now, after a couple of charges up to 50-80%, it suddenly charges super slowly.

It went from 9% to 19% in almost two hours. I tried to connect it and disconnect it several times, but it still charges super slowly. It's now 20% (from 19%) in 15 minutes. What is going on?

I'm using the official charger, but I did try with another one as well with the same result. What is wrong?

Hi my fellow AR/VR Users and Players,

Alright, so my Quest 3 I literally just recieved today after preordering it had the same issue as well, figured out the cause an hour ago after thinking about it for afew hours.

    Troubleshooting process:

So without further ado, to fix it I discovered that when you choose "power off" after holding down the power button for afew seconds, the headset does not power off but goes into a sleep mode, which honestly like windows a hard shutdown option and sleep option should be implemented into the Meta Quest OS in my opinion. For some back story, my issue started after a mandatory update.

So this told me a hint, either "A" the headset is faulty(doubtful to be honest), "B" the software had a bug with battery management(unlikely), or "C" the updates were causing issues because components within the device were not shutting off that needed to update. Turned out it was "C".

To fix it when in sleep mode"powered off" I held down the volume down " power button key and chose shutdown. Which truly powered it down. Then I held down the volume down " power button key again and chose the "boot device" option which is safe because no data is deleted and it only performed a clean initial boot of the new firmware. After that it charged great, oddly even the tracking was far better, and screen looked clearer, must be the update taking root.

    Solution:

1.Power down the headset from the menu. This puts it into sleep mode for some odd reason instead of truly powering it down.

    2. Hold volume key down + power button and choose "shut down".

    3. After shutdown completes hold volume down + power button again and choose "boot device".

This likely can solve many other update issues too down the line.

    Hope this helps!

    My best,

    XSlayer007

Please Note: This only works if the charger is the official charger for the quest 3 and or a charger or battery solution that supports at least 18w, up to a maximum of 27w. Finally, it is always best to use the Meta verified charging accessories and charger.

Yes, hard rebooting the headset solved the issue for me. I forced a reboot by holding the power button until it turned itself off for real, and not sleep mode.

More information: I made all the updates when starting the headset for the very first time. And I didn't have the problem the first couple of charges or hours, and without further updates, the problem occured for unknown reasons. So in my case, it probably didn't have anything to do with the updates.

Good to know a quick solution to the problem, though I'm still curious to what caused it from the start.

Did you use the original charger and cable or are you using a battery pack?

  • The Quest 3 comes with an 18W charger but can support up to 27W. I got the stock charger with the dock and the headstrap, controllers, headset take a long time to all charge. The dock can support up to 45W so I will hook it up to one tomorrow.

I think it’s only support 27w charging if the unit is powered off. When it’s on it struggle to gain any power (regardless of battery/plug wattage).

      • Well, while I did have the issue for about 3 or 4 hours I did notice that the battery on my elite battery strap was running out pretty fast. I cannot say for certain what the issue may have been. However my suspicion is that a background program was causing the Snap Dragon chip to run at a high amount of power draw, even in sleep mode. My headset was also a bit hot to the touch until the hard reboot as well. Because fully restarting the headset causes the hardware to fully shutdown and the RAM to clear since RAM is volatile memory and without power thus erased itself.

With all of that said, in my case I think something in the initial update triggered it, not certain though. I sadly do not have the analytical tools necessary to figure that one out... Haha

Although since a hard reboot fixes it, as long as I do not see it again anytime soon, then I personally am not too worried. Software can do some odd things, especially if a running task refuses to close. This happens on PC's occasionally too. Actually that recently happened to me when I tried to force quit Cyberpunk 2077 on my rig. It disappeared from the task manager, but continued to run anyway and eat up CPU and GPU resources.

I also vaguely remember the Quest 2 being reported to do the same thing once some time ago. Although I never personally experienced it, so I never followed that original issue. Back then I also was not a member of the community forums.

This reboot process didn't work for me.

I was trying to use the VR Power battery pack setup that worked on the Oculus 2, which resulted in this slow charging issue. I found that I needed to use the original MQ3 charging cable instead of the cable that came with the VR Power battery pack. That resolved my issue.

The MQ3 is now charging faster than it's draining.

I have the meta quest 3s. I’ve used it for a couple days usually goes from 12 to 100 within 2 hours but the past day it charges extremely slowly. Holding down the power button and volume button does nothing. I tried resetting it and did nothing. Everytime I’m finished using the vr I shut it down completely. I hold down the power button till a screen pops up saying put the vr to sleep. Instead of say yes I hold the power button down again till it says shutting off. I wait for the screen to go dark and then I put it on the charger. I’m using the charger that came with the quest. This happened after an update.

  • For me there is no shutdown button.  But the is a power off.  When I select power off it does the same thing it does when you power it off normally.

Hello there, Seagate01184! From your post you are indicating that your Quest 3 is slow to charge, and that when you power off from the Menu the issue does not change. Many folks have resolved similar issues by hard power-cycling the Quest device. To do that, just hold down the power button and volume down button for 30 seconds until you hear the boot-up sound. If  for some reason the boot-up sound is not heard try these steps:

      • Hold the power and volume (-) button down simultaneously until the boot screen loads on your headset.
      • Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight "Boot Device" and press the power button.
      • Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.

Give that a shot and if you are still having issues with it slow charging, reach back out with any additional symptoms you may be experiencing and we'll see what the best way forward will be!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Heya Seagate09184! Hope your week is wrapping up well! We just wanted to pop in to see if you're still needing any further assistance. Of course, if anything is needed, do let us know! We're happy to continue looking into this concern!

  • Cheers, got this delivered today and charged it. Everything was fine, but it didn't last long, could be, I robocop demo & downloaded some of my library.

Plugged in to charge & 2.5h later, the orange light is still on. Read your notes, unplugged, donned H/S, and it had been doing an U/D & waited for a restart.

So I'm just charging it again...

Funny thing is, when will most of us learn about the simple things. I have the Oculus,  Oculus Rift,  & The Quest 2 already...

Writing this, it's just finished charging.

    Again, cheers.

  • Quest 3 charges very slow no quick charge. My 4 year old phone can do 4x the charging speed.

Hey there, Toschy! We know that having charging issues while trying to enjoy VR gaming can delay an amazing VR experience, so we would love to look further into this for you in order to get you back to a smooth VR experience.

Before we start, could you please try the troubleshooting steps and answer the questions listed below just so we can get a better understanding of this matter?

      1. Are you using the provided power adapter to charge the headset?
      2. Does your headset feel warm to the touch? If so, you may not have noticed the stopped charging notification. If the headset detects that an internal temperature threshold has been reached, it will disable charging to prevent damage to the headset. For this, we advise you to disconnect the charging cable and allow the headset to cool before trying to charge it again.
      3. Remove any unsupported third-party accessories that may affect battery charging or consume power (such as external battery packs, external fans, etc.).
      4. Attempt to charge the headset for 2 hours.
         - When used, Quest 3 will consume power faster than it can charge. The headset must be left powered off or in a sleep state during charging.
         - Computer USB ports will not provide sufficient power to charge the Quest 3, resulting in a very slow charge or failure to charge at all. The headset must be connected to a wall outlet using the provided power adapter.
      5. If you have another Quest 3 power adapter (such as from a second headset), have them try the other power adapter.
Note: Apple product chargers will not work with Quest 3.
      6. Are you using a facial interface accessory? If so, try to charge the headset again without the facial interface accessory. Some facial interfaces may block the proximity sensor, which can impact the power of the headset.
      7. If you are using the Elite Strap with Battery or any third-party accessories, try to disconnect the Elite Strap with Battery or any third-party accessories and try charging the headset again.
      8. Try charging from a different source (another wall outlet), preferably one on a circuit.
         - If using a splitter, power bar, or extension cord, try removing it and plugging it directly into the wall outlet.
      9.  Have there been any liquid spills on the headset?
      10. See if the headset will load the boot screen and then exit out:
        a. Hold the power and volume (-) buttons on the headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads.
        b. Exit and reboot the headset.
      11. If it is still not charging properly, factory reset the headset. Please ensure you have cloud backup enabled before performing a factory reset.

Keep us updated and let us know how it goes. If you are still having these issues where your headset is charging slowly, please don't hesitate to let us know so we can continue to look into this for you. We look forward to hearing back from you soon!
