Squeaky controller on brand new Q3. No advance replacement- "return to best buy"

I have a squeaky grip trigger on my left controller. It's loud, but the controller works fine. I made some time to message meta to find out I have to send my controller in and wait an undisclosed amount of time before getting a replacement (refurbished).

Apparently, there is no way to send me a left controller ahead of time as a gesture to a long-time customer to keep me playing on my new headset. As a busy adult with limited time, I don't love the idea of having my $500 purchase just sit unusable for the foreseeable future, especially with all the forum topics being made of RMAs taking forever.

I would assume that Meta could make a small exception and give me an advanced replacement (even though it's not an option any longer). However, I'm being instructed to do a FULL HEADSET RETURN to best buy in order to roll the dice on a new controller.

Is any support on the forums there to help me out- that can't be economical for Meta, plus requires me driving into town in person and fully swapping a headset for another which might have it's own issues.

It's just a squeaky button, is my only recourse really a full return? Is there any chance of me simply getting an advanced replacement of a single controller from Meta?

Hopefully, someone can help here, but this really is making me regret sticking with meta for another headset, and makes me question the warranty being worth it at all.

  • If I were you, I'd do the full headset swap for another brand new one. If anything is wrong, you could always demand another swap from your retailer. You could perhaps ask the staff at Best Buy if they would be willing to take a controller from a new box, but it's at their discretion.

I think steve_40 advice is probably the way to go but if you want to try a DIY fix, a little bit of comp-lube is safe for use with electronics and game controllers are one of its uses.  I'll put the website here. You can get small bottles of it. It can help with other things like squeaky keyboards etc. Not saying to do it but it might be better than the not so great return and replacement process.

So I came across a video recommending “electrical contact cleaner” from WD-40 (a special version, not the oil lube)

I got it and sprayed away, let it dry and so far the squeak is gone! Apparently this works on stick drift too.

Gladly I won’t have to return my headset!

That's great! I knew about comp-lube but never heard of that one. Good to know, 👍

Additionally, comp-lube is perfect for plastic on plastic friction and isn't messy. You just need a tiny amount. 🙂
