Stuck with no UI, blue avatar, Settings isn't responding

TLDR:

I'm stuck in passthrough or virtual home, with no menu to interact with. At startup, I sometimes see a popup saying "Settings isn't responding" (Close app/Wait). Virtual home is empty, it just has the mirror showing this blue avatar. When I power off the headset, it sometimes show the Headset Power options popup.

What I've tried

Turning off the headset.
Restarting the headset
Booting the headset in safe mode
Sideload the latest update available (v79) -> update successful but issue still persists.
Backup my games saves with ADB commands (tried to save sdcard/Android/Data to my PC but some folders have denied access)

What I can do

See passthrough
See virtual home (it's empty, it just loads the mirror with a blue avatar)
Hear sound of the menu toggling on and off
See my controller tracking overlay
See the hand tracking overlay
Hold the meta button to recenter (useless because there's no UI to recenter)
See my boundary
Take screenshots and it actually sync it with my phone app (that means OS is still working and is connected to Meta servers.)

Don't want to factory reset

I really want to avoid factory reset because my internet is VERY slow and downloading 500GB of games again will take weeks. Plus I'll be upset if I loose my games progress (it's not cloud saved).
I've seen people reporting similar issues and factory reset apparently isn't working.

Couldn't find a fix on forums, I am getting desperate. Thank you the people who will try to help. I'll keep this post updated.

  • Update: It is fixed now. I struggled with this issue for over a week, tried everything, posted here for help... and 5 minute after I publish on a forum, it fixed itself. πŸ™ƒ

I have changed absolutely nothing, so if you're have the same issue, I don't even know what's the fix.

I love when things fixing itself!

  • my internet is VERY slow

That's your problem right there 😁. I had a momentary hiccup on my home internet a while ago, and my Quest 3 acted like yours for a few minutes.

It could be the problem yes. Especially because my issue appeared kinda after an OS update.
I updated my Quest 3 at home with my slow internet. Update applied successfully, no issues at all. The next day, I powered off my Quest 3 to transport it somewhere else, and when I turned it on... no menu and unusable.

  • I'm stuck where you were. Unfortunately, it's not fixing itself. My wifi is good (180/20) and I have tried starting apps from my phone and it tells me when your headset gets on wifi it will be ready.?? I can cast, and in my case the passthrough works. other than that everything you mentioned I also have, (including purple avatar). I have tried several restarts, connecting to my computer, (wants me to initiate the link from my 'invisible' menu) and SIri works but cannot change or start anything.

      My wifi is good (180/20)

180/20 is your broadband internet speed, not wifi. That speed is sufficient, but it sounds like there is some issue going on with your local wifi connection. Your phone with the Meta app, PC and headset should ideally be using the same 5GHz SSID, and you should not be using a bridge or mesh wifi.

Have you tried a hard restart? Press and hold the sleep button until the headset fully shuts off (not restarts). Then when you see the battery indicator in the lenses, press and hold the sleep button for a few seconds until you see the Meta logo and the headset boots up.

Something else you can try, but it is a long shot, is to go into the Cloud setting on your headset, and manually back-up each of your apps to the Cloud (some won't back up, but that is OK). This instantly fixed a bizarre issue that I had once with corrupted library entries and missing icons.

One more thing you could try is to connect your headset to a friend's network. See if it makes any difference.

      Gray_Jedi_Master are you still stuck?

I couldn't cast my phone, but if you can, can you see the menu through your phone?
Apparently pressing your meta button 5 times in a row on your right Touch controller can display the bug report popup and cause the UI to reappear.

  • Zorky2C Glad you got it fixed, but as steve_40 said, you should really get yourself some faster internet, preferably 5ghz high speed as recommended by Meta. It will be worth it in the end!

5Ghz is the wifi. It's the broadband internet speed that needs to be faster in this case. 50mbps or better is sufficient.

Maccyb123  Don't worry, I already have a dedicated 5Ghz router for PCVR but unfortunately, there's no way to speed up my internet bandwidth here in the country side :(

      (I have 16mbps bandwidth btw 😬)

That's a pity. They definitely need to improve services outside of the city and suburban areas, it's the 21st century ! What about Elon's starlink service? Not sure what available and speed it has though. Anyway I'm glad you got it sorted out. 😁
