V78.1028 has appeared on my Quest 3s today. However after 3 attempts to install it,where it says successfully installed and restart, the update still appears asking to be installed. Anyone else have this issue ? Is it a general problem?
Hey, guess what. I got another software update today, v79.1033. My headset was on v79.1027. So I updated and rebooted. Now my Quest 3 says I'm on v79.1031 🙃🤪🤭.
I don't get why so many people don't have Navigator yet, it's almost October. I'm at v79.1033 and no navigator at all and the last 2 updates always show 79.1033.
And...
I was also reading the release notes on v81 which is in beta now, and its states that Navigator gets an update, presuming you already have Navigator by now on v79. I have v79 latest & well for some reason -- no Navigator. What's v81 going to update, what doesn't exist?
Plus, I've had 2 updates that just keep showing v79.1033 & nothing new, nothing happening at all, no UI difference, no Navigator -- nothing -- just firmware after firmware of really nothing, oh sorry -- there was something new, a nastry firmware loop. Have to say, thinking about it now -- that was the most exciting thing that's happened to my headset all summer, cause besides that "nothing" happened!
Yesterday I got another update, v79 (no additional numbers) and it was only about ~4 MB in size. I updated, and it seemed to take a while to download, so it was certainly a lot more than 4Mb. Anyway, after rebooting, my version number is still v79.1031 but the installation date is now correct (10 Sep 2025) and the build number has changed to 51154110.16430.520. The controller firmware also updated. Interestingly, if you look under "Headset Settings"->"About Headset" in the MetaHorizon+ app, the headset is always identified by the build number, not by the software version. How many updates have we had where the build number never changed? 🤪
Same for me but I was on v79.1032 and I updated to 79.1033 and when it asked me to restart the headset loaded the V79.1031🤣🤔😤🤪. These people from Meta are making a mess of things again.
Right? I mean, check out the screenshot below. It's beyond pathetic. Interesting that v79.1033 aka v79.1031 says in the headset it was released on 25 August... same date as v78.1033. They didn't even get the version numbers correct in the useless copy-pasted release notes from the previous version. They never specify what "general improvements" and "bug fixes" they made, it could be pure fantasy as far as I am concerned. Are you "enjoying" the improvements? 😁
I'm on v79.1027 and no new Navigator either. Let's face it, even if we get Navigator, it will probably be a massive anti-climax and simply introduce new problems. We will probably all complain that Navigator sux and we want the old interface back 😁.
If you use the Elite headstrap with external battery, does your battery indicator now only show one battery connected after you power off your headset? Mine does that now after the v79.1027 update 😕.
So today, finally, v79 arrived! So I firstly made sure my Q3 headset (v78.1031 aka 78.1027) was fully charged and then decided to bite the bullet. I clicked the download button for the update and... the download bar instantly appeared (yay). But I noted that every time the bar progressed, it would cause all the text in the update window to jerk up and down in an unprofessional manner 🙄. Anyway, the bar filled to 100% and then the text said "Updating OS", so I waited about 3 minutes and then the "restart" button appeared. I held my breath and clicked the button and waited for the headset to restart. The Infinity logo appeared and then a firmware update progress bar appeared with the icon of a silicon chip. Looking good so far. After the progress bar got to 100%, the headset booted to the profile menu. But my controllers were no longer working! So I had to use hand tracking to select my profile. After I did this, to my relief, it auto-installed firmware updates for my controllers and they started working again. Phew. But wait, the OS menus now appeared, but my entire virtual environment was pitch black. Uh oh. I opened the settings menu and saw that I am now on V79.1027 (yay, finally they fixed that annoying version number bug). Then I tried turning on passthrough, which was fine, then when I switched it back off, my virtual environment had reappeared. Phew! But, disappointingly, STILL NO NAVIGATOR 😭.
I just got another micro update, second one in two days. "v79" build 5115411.17040.520 (7.13Mb). After installing, my headset still says it is v.79.1031, same as last time and the one before (which was actually v79.1033). I haven't noticed any changes in my headset software so far. I still have to reset the Elite Strap/Battery after every power off (if I have the charge cable connected) otherwise it only displays one battery indicator after shutdown. Edit: after shutting down the headset with ES/B without the charging cable connected, then plugging in the charging cable to the ES/B, it correctly showed both battery indicators without me needing to reset the ES/B.
Update: so after updating to v79.1027, after powering off my Quest 3, the battery indicator now only shows one battery connected even though I have the Elite headstrap with battery connected. Previously it would show both batteries. I can temporarily fix this by the following steps exactly:
with the charging cable connected to the Elite battery, briefly press the button on the Elite battery. The orange light should come on for a few seconds.
- after the orange light on the Elite battery has gone off again, disconnect the charging cable.
- plug the charging cable back into the Elite battery (the light should stay unlit).
- press and hold the button on the Elite battery until the green light comes on. Continue holding the button until the green light goes out, then release the button immediately (if you hold it too long, the green light will come on again and start flashing rapidly).
Now put on the headset and briefly press the power button on the Quest 3. You should see both batteries in the display. However, after powering on your headset and powering it off again, it will once again only show one battery.
PS: the Elite battery and headset seem to be charging fine, regardless of the above issue.
So I guess we’re officially at QuestGate now — because this is ridiculous.
You can grab a random Quest 3 off the shelf and there’s a solid chance it’ll have firmware issues baked right in. That’s not a rare defect, that’s a widespread problem. And yet… still no patch. Still no update. Still radio silence. If this isn’t a serious issue, then what exactly qualifies?
Here’s a thought: maybe Meta could release an actual announcement about this instead of letting customers flood the forums with the same troubleshooting posts over and over. Software mistakes happen — but ignoring them? That’s a choice.
I've been on 78.1028 since mid June, with it attempting to install 78.1030 etc and never succeeding. My PC Link App has just updated to 79.0.0.1143.381, so the stable must be available. Just booted up my Quest 3 and still shows "you're up to date". What gives with this? I've been patient until now but if the update is broken as suggested, how will v79.0 get pushed, feels like we're stuck on v78. I've read about this for months on Reddit, on here etc and still no real answer to the problem. Smh.
My Q3 headset still says it is on v78.1027 ("installed 8 July 2025") even though I installed v78.1031 three or four days ago. Stranger yet, I have the "Adaptive Lighting" setting which is supposed to be a new feature of v79 🤪.
My Quest 3 hasn't updated in months and is stuck on 78.1028 like others. It does work just fine but this update process, and not really knowing where you stand, is pretty annoying.
