84 year old needs help......please

I have just purchased a used Quest 2 that I want to use mainly with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and X-Plane 12 but there might be other "games/simulators" I might try.

I have tried the headset and all seems OK. I have a hardwire cable from the headset to a USB 3.0 port of my PC and this is detected correctly. I am using the correct Link cable.

I have tried to follow the various tutorial videos on how to connect the headset for PCVR but when I try VR in MSFS2024 it says no headset connected (I am not going to be using my mobile just my desktop).

I confess to finding the articles pointing to the correct software a bit confusing (some of the names appear to have changed). I have Virtual Desktop Streamer and Meta Horizon Link installed.

I would be grateful if someone could guide me through the correct process and provide links to the necessary software, so I can ensure I have everything in order.

Sorry to be a nuisance and thanks in advance for any help.

.

Best advice I could give is to watch some YouTube videos, there should be plenty out there.

    it says no headset connected

The "no headset connected" error usually means SteamVR is not running.

Did you purchase MSFS2024 through Steam? If so, you'll need to open Steam on your PC and then go to the Steam Store and find and download SteamVR (it's free). After establishing a connection to your PC using Horizon Link (or SteamLink), run Steam (if it isn't already open on your PC), then open SteamVR (if using SteamLink, then Steam and SteamVR should open automatically when you establish a connection to the PC), then run MSFS2024, then switch it to VR mode (CTRL+TAB).

If you get stuck, feel free to ask questions here.

Thanks for the reply. My MSFS is the XBOX version.

I have tested both MSFS2024 and X-PLANE 12 and get the same error.

Is there something else I need to do to make the headset visible to them?

I will go back to the Facebook tutorials and check that I have followed everything correctly.

For interest, the item was bought used. Is it possible it could be faulty, and is there any check I can run to ensure? Seller stated in full working order.

The XBOX gamepass version also needs SteamVR, so you still have to make sure you have SteamVR installed and then run it before launching the game.

Have you managed to set up cable Link or AirLink and establish a connection from your headset to your PC and view the Link dashboard or PC desktop in your headset? That's the first step. If you can't get this step to work, then there would be some extra configuration needed.

  • Thanks, I have the cable Link connected from the headset to my PC but can't see the desktop in the headset.

Have you installed Meta Horizon Link on your PC and paired your PC with your headset?

Next, after connecting the USB cable, you need to go into "Settings>Link" on the headset and make sure the "Turn on Link" toggle is enabled. Then under "Open Dash" click "Open".

This should open the following launch screen:

In my case here, I'm using AirLink (green toggle is to the right). Yours should be toggled to the left to use cable connection. Make sure it says "Connected-Meets requirements" then click the "Launch" button to start a Link session on your PC.

The Link session should start and you should see the grey "void" and dashboard. If you see only the grey tiles "void" without the dashboard, briefly click the Meta button on the right controller to bring up the dashboard.

Your dashboard might look slightly different to the image above, as I've attached an old screenshot.

  • Thanks for the info. I am really struggling with the Quest, most likely due to my age! I will keep plodding on, and the information you have given will be a great help.

Wearing glasses doesn't help. I have bought the glasses spacer and hope that will work.

    Thanks for your patience!

Be very careful to make sure your glasses don't touch the lenses in the headset! You don't want to get scratches on either. I managed to scratch one pair of glasses on a previous headset (even when using the spacer) and the lenses in my glasses cost over $1,000! 😟

steve_40 is right!, you have to be careful. I bought prescription lenses that magnetically attach to the heads and they're great. No cumbersome glasses but you'll still need the spacer or your eyelashes will be rubbing on the lenses.

  • I’m still having trouble setting up the headset. When I turn it on, an image appears showing two handsets with a pairing strip being removed. Pressing the power button only gives me options to power off or reboot.

On my desktop, Meta Horizon Link isn’t showing any devices, and the but the option to add a new one doesn't work.

I'm pretty sure the problem lies with me; the old grey matter doesn’t work as well these days, especially when it comes to something new. It’s just really frustrating not making much progress.

This afternoon, I connected to the Wi-Fi, but it showed a limited connection, which was unexpected since I’m on fiber. I also got a notification that the headset needed an update, but the download didn’t move forward, and now I can’t access it anymore.

decrepidpilot18 My friend, sometimes it can be difficult to set up a VR headset as there are so many things to do and it's easy to make a wrong move. It might be time to find a friend or family member who is a bit more tech savvy to set it up for you. Just a suggestion!

I understand that you want to play pcvr......

...... but the sentence above sounds as if you even haven't pair your Quest to the mobile app yet. Before you've done that, you are not able to connect it to pc.

The link and the video might help.

How to set up your Meta Quest 2 headset

Oh. So you haven't even completed the initial headset setup, which is to pair it with the Meta Horizon mobile phone app? You must do that first and get the headset working standalone before even contemplating using it for PCVR.

Your headset is running through its initial setup procedure. It's asking you to remove the paper strips from the controllers (they stop the battery from draining on new controllers). As your headset is second-hand, the strips have already been removed. You need to wait a few minutes for that message to time out, then you can continue past it. But you MUST have the Meta Horizon app installed on your mobile phone first, with bluetooth and Location Services enabled on both the phone and the mobile app. You also need a Meta Horizon account. If you don't have an account set up already, the mobile app will guide you through it.

See the video that Choleni  has posted in this thread.

  • Another morning headache—still stuck with the limited access issue when trying to connect the Quest 2 to Wi-Fi, even though the speed is great. Maybe there’s something in the settings, like DHCP, that needs adjusting to fix it?

The slow speed is stopping the headset from being updated.

I have already tried resetting the router by turning it off for 5 minutes.

Got a busy couple of days ahead so won't be spending much time with the Ocullis.

Ok, but afaik he hasn't even gotten to the stage where he can log on to the headset... so he won't be able to get into the headset settings.

Make sure you are connecting the headset to 5 GHz wifi, nor 2.4GHz. You could also try connecting to a hotspot on your phone (just for updating) if it is a router problem.

Edit: you could also try connecting to a different wifi network, maybe at a friend's house etc. If the wifi still isn't working, it could be because the software is out of date (because the headset was factory reset). In that case, we'll have to walk you through how to update your headset using a wired USB connection to your PC using the Quest Software Update webpage.

  • After a break of a few days I am back again. I have enabled my mobile hotspot and I am going to see if I can connect to that. I have fixed the new headband and should be able to use the controllers in a more effective manner I can also read the display without the aid of my glasses!

It would be great if there were someone on the forum who lived near Colchester Essex UK and would be prepared to do a face to face visit, with monetary help of course,  if I still don't have any luck.

    Fingers crossed!

Colchester is a bit far from Brisbane, unfortunately 🙃.

Brisbane is a bit far, but you can get a cheap enough price from Istanbul to the UK. Economy class and a nice hotel paid for in Colchester and I might come over.........would probably have to bring the missus though 😂

  • Hi back again.

Trying to use the Meta Quest update tool.

I select the Sideload option on the headset without it being connected

I then get to the screen where is says to pair my headset and then it says the update is waiting to be downloaded. My headset screen is blank but the power led shows it is in the right update mode (purple).

After about 4 minutes the device is disconnected.

Is there an alternative method to update?

Also I did a system reset and I get the opening pairing screen with the two handsets having the paper withdrawn but I can't get past this screen.

Maybe you are already on the latest update? Normally, you only need the update tool if you have issues. The headset gets its updates automatically. Even if you turn off auto update....after some weeks it will update.

Just wait 10 min or so, the screen will go away then and you can continue.

I forgot to mention in my last post.... you can try updating the headset following the steps in the video.
