Black Screen when using Virtual Desktop in Oculus PC App

UPDATE: Solution found by Hansaplastique! THANK YOU!

It seems this method forces Intel(R) UHD Graphics to render for OVRServer_x64.exe. At least, that's what's selected under "Power Saving" for my PC. My games still run fine using this method, since they still use the GPU. The dashboard/OVRServer doesn't utilize the GPU while in use. Changing the preferred processor in Nvidia Control panel for OVRServer_x64.exe does NOT solve the issue, although I thought it would effectively accomplish the same thing.

Many thanks to Hansaplastique. You're a real gamer. I made a video tutorial for the solution for anyone confused.

Oculus app isn't showing desktop, just black screen. Though, I can still control the cursor with my controller. I have a Rift S and a Quest 2 and both have the issue. So far, I've restarted, repaired install, and installed latest graphics card drivers but have had no success. I also completely uninstalled and re-installed and am still having the issue. Currently blaming the recent update. My Quest 2 is running on v. 27, because v. 28 is not yet available to me. But I doubt that's issue because my Rift S also has the problem.

OLD 4/25/21: I've been working with Oculus Support, but so far no amount of troubleshooting has solved the issue. My working theories are:

1. Nvidia Optimus laptops

2. The new update just glitched out the integrated Virtual Desktop in the Oculus PC application.

This issue is not present on my Desktop computer. I run VR on a MSI GL75 Leopard 10SFK-029. I'm still able to play games, and the black screen is my only symptom.

Go it to work properly now without the need for an external monitor:

Go to Windows Settings -> System -> Display -> Graphics Settings (way at the bottom).

Under "Graphics performance preference" -> "Choose an app to set preference" -> "Desktop app".

Click "Browse" and select: C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\OVRServer_x64.exe

    Click "Add".

Select "Options" and set it to "Power saving", and click "Save".

Restart the Oculus software and Virtual Desktop now works properly.

This worked for me on an 2020 AsusROG with an nVidia 2070.

However, when you open up 'Home', it also runs using the iGPU instead of the eGPU and runs terrible.

  • Also having that problem.

I can see my desktop but it goes black when I move the pointer on it. If i point the controller away from the desktop screen than I can see the content. Icons on the virtual desktop are unreadable. Graphics looks like low res 4 bit 16 colors.

Above solution did not resolve the problem. So this future is completely unusable for me 😞

    Any suggestions please?

Hey there, gwynbleidd.2022! We hate to hear your VR experience is being interrupted. So that we can get to the bottom of this issue, please respond with the following:

      • Are you using the link cable or Airlink?
      • How long has this issue been going on?
      • If using the link cable, does it have in tears or kinks?

Once we grab this information, we can work together to knock this issue out for you!

        Hello there!

I tried both methods, by cable and airlink. Same result. Virtual desktop is visible but like I said before it's very low quality. Icons unreadable, washed out colors looks like 4bit only.

When I direct pointer on the desktop window it goes black.

I got Oculus quest 2 for few days only and that's how it is since I set up a link with my Windows PC day 1. It never worked for me.

I have tried the workaround as it's suggested in this post to set OVRServer_x64.exe as Power Saving, I tried High Performance, as well as adding other exe files like OVR Service Launcher but nothing works.

  • Same issue, got it to work but when I change the settings for OVRServer to power saving and try to play games i end up with performance issues. Tried playing Half Life Alyx and started lagging. Game gave me an alert that my "Graphics device is too out of date for this game, may cause performance issues" even though i have an RTX 3060 and AMD 7 5700

  • I'm here on v56 and the solution works, but my computer (ASUS ROG Strix G713IM) is unable to run Oculus Link via Air Link or Cable when the solution is in place. I'm surprised that they never bothered to fix the issue since it came up 2 YEARS AGO. I'm seeing a 6 fps, extremely jittery mess and I'm sure there's nothing I know of that will fix the issue.

Writing this in 2025, in case anyone else has been having a black screen when their host monitor turns off. You can install "mixed reality link" on your windows desktop via the microsoft store then pair it to your quest 3 headset. Inside your quest headset go to quick controls->remote desktop->set up new connection->select your desktop. Once you've connected remotely to your desktop while in your headset, you can run Virtual Desktop and the remote desktop screen should now be visible instead of some black screen with only your mouse.

No quite correct. It won't work unless you have 2 apps installed on your headset: "Windows app" and "Remote Desktop", which I didn't have on my Quest 3 (I may have uninstalled them earlier), so I had to download them. Without those two apps, you won't be able to pair the desktop to the PC. Also, if you have the Meta Quest Link software installed on your PC, you will not be able to install "mixed reality link" as it is already included in Meta Quest Link.
