Does meta quest link app support gaming laptops?

Because the app would not detect my meta quest pro even when I connected it using the provided USB C cable or Air link. My specs are Intel i7-13700H, NVDA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU, 16 GB Memory.

Yes. You'll need to be more specific what you have done and where it is failing.

I borrowed a meta quest pro that got set up by someone else to work on a VR project in Unreal Engine. I downloaded the meta horizon link software onto my laptop and made sure my meta account is on both the software and the headset. I then turned the headset on and connect it to the laptop using the provided usb c cable in hope of linking it to my laptop through the meta horizon link software. However, the software would not detect the headset and gave me a notification about my pc doesn't have spec requirements, even though I'm sure my laptop specs met the requirement (i7 CPU and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-series GPU). I tried the link setting on my headset and it wouldn't detect my laptop for pairing (I guess it's because the meta software is yet to detect it). I also tried the meta quest remote desktop to connect and that works. However I can't use VR Preview in Unreal Engine that way as it only cast the laptop screen. That's pretty much what I been struggling with. Edit: Both the headset and meta horizon link are updated to the latest version.

Check the Windows power settings and make sure the USB ports are not set to power saving mode:

        • Device Manager: Open Device Manager, expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers," right-click each "USB Root Hub," go to Properties > Power Management, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
        • Power Options: Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, find USB settings, and set "USB selective suspend setting" to Disabled.

If that doesn't fix it, try manually re-installing the Link drivers:

        • Close the Meta Quest Link app completely.
        • Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
        • Enter the driver file path: C:\\Program Files\\Oculus\\Support\\oculus-drivers (this path may vary depending on your installation, also "oculus" may have been replaced with "Meta Horizon" in newer installations).
        • Find and open the oculus-driver.exe file (possibly renamed to horizon in newer installations).
        • Relaunch the Meta Quest Link app and try connecting your headset again.

If the above doesn't help, try opting in to the Meta Horizon link PTC and then wait for the software update notification and update it. If you are already opted in, try opting out.

  • You mention using the provided USB C cable. But also that you borrowed the Quest Pro from someone else.

Quest headsets come with a USB C cable that is only designed for charging. It is USB 2 rated for data, so not good enough for Link but can do simple data transfers like copying screenshots.

You need a USB 3 rated USB C cable, if the person you borrowed it from didn't give you one instead of the default it comes with.

  • If the cable you have is the one that officially comes with the Quest, then yes, you need a better cable to use it with a PC.  (I'm still not 100% sure in this case, since the person you got it from may have changed the cable, but it doesn't sound like it).

The one Steve links to above is really good, it's the official Link cable. It's a 5m (16 feet) long active fibre optic cable with USB-C at each end. Very light and thin. It's a bit delicate though, fibre optic cables can snap internally if you kink them too hard. I have one, I mainly use it for a webcam or charging my phone, since I now use my Quest 3 with WIFI.

Any good quality USB-3 rated cable should work though. They can be USB-A to USB-C cables or USB-C to USB-C, it's just the USB 3 rating that really matters. You can buy MUCH cheaper ones than the Meta cable on Amazon. If the cable is longer than maybe 3m you'll need an active cable which cost more. They will have a small box part way along the cable. Looks like most of them now have an extra power port on the little box so it helps charge the Quest while in use.

If you have any USB-3 cables, even if they are too short, you can at least test that the headset works with them and your laptop before buying a long one.
