How do I set up Casting from a child’s account?

We’ve just purchased a quest 3 for my child for his Birthday, we’ve managed to set him up a child’s account supervised from my account (I won’t ever be using the device but set up my account just so I can manage his), but we can’t seem to cast to a tv/phone so we can watch him play? He asks us questions whilst he is playing, but we can’t help as can’t see what he’s doing, it says in order to cast we need to log in as me on the headset but then he wouldn’t be playing on his own account and wouldn’t be safe. Could you please let me know how we can set up casting from his account? Many thanks 😊

  • Hi there Volthyzer! Thank you for reaching out! We understand you are curious on why casting from a child account is not an option. At this time, it isn't currently a feature that we offer for child accounts, but this could possibly change in the future, as we are constantly upgrading to fit the enjoyment of our customers. We recommend submitting your idea to our Ideas Forum so that you can possibly be implemented in the future. We hope you find this information helpful and we appreciate you for being apart of our Quest Family!

  • Hey there, everyone! I know how important it is to view your kids VR experiences so we can help them if they get stuck or see them having a great time. And I want to keep you as informed as I can about what you're experiencing!

At this moment, there is not a way for child accounts to cast from their headset to the mobile app, which would then allow you to cast onto a TV or computer. What I can recommend is that you share this idea on our Ideas Page, where other users and developers are able to view each other's posts and work together to improve VR for everyone. Some ideas that have been posted there have even been implemented in recent updates! I know being able to see my kids playing their games on a big screen would be a great experience for me and my family.

I hope to see your post there!

Why is this not possible? There is absolutely no reason why this shouldn't be possible. You can cast with a primary account perfectly fine. Why not a child account?

  • So in reading some other posts I discovered that while casting to the mobile app from a secondary child account is not currently possible, you can actually cast from a child account to the Chrome web browser after logging in to their account on the browser.   Here are instructions https://www.meta.com/help/quest/articles/in-vr-experiences/oculus-features/troubleshoot-casting-to-a-screen-with-meta-quest/
I just tested it with my son's account and was able to watch and listen to what he is doing. Hopefully they add this option to the mobile app soon since that is more straight-forward approach for most parents.

Hey, i also think that the lack of this feature is bonkers... but there is a simple work around. Just let the kids use your profile and you use theirs. Then you can watch them via the app!

  • use anything (computer , android tv, smartphone or tablet) with a chromium browser (in fact, any browser except firefox I think),
and then put this url   :
    https://www.oculus.com/casting

and then you are asked to connect (with the same account you want to cast)
and that's it : you can see everything !

But yes I have no idea why meta didn't let the usual casting in their app for the children accounts (who yet needs it more than adults)

  • **Subject:** Feedback on Casting Limitations for Child Accounts

I’ve added my post to this thread to highlight my own experience with this issue: [Ongoing Issue with Child Account Screen Sharing](https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Quest-Development/Ongoing-Issue-with-Child-Account-Screen-Sharing/td-p/1261894).

This morning, I was forced to provide a date of birth for an account that was set up to enable screen sharing. This account was specifically being used so that we, as parents, could watch what our child was doing while playing.

It’s frustrating that the inability to cast from a child account has forced us into workarounds, such as setting up the account as an adult account, which means losing parental controls. This limitation creates unnecessary complications and defeats the purpose of having a child account with appropriate oversight.

This issue has clearly been affecting users for over a year, as seen in the original post from November 2023. It’s long overdue for Meta to address this and provide a solution that allows parents to monitor their children’s activities effectively without compromising on controls or functionality.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  • TL;DR: Sign into oculus.com/casting with the parent account not the child account.

It took me a while to figure out how to cast from a child account to a browser. When this thread started, I believe it was impossible to cast at all from a child account. Now, you still can't cast to the mobile app, but you can cast to a desktop web browser. But, at least to me, it wasn't obvious how to do it.

The critical step I was missing was signing into the correct account. I was trying to sign into my child's account on the web browser. Instead, I needed to sign into my account and then choose my child's profile when prompted.

Bad: signing into oculus.com/casting with a child account

Good: signing into oculus.com/casting with the parent's account and choosing the child's profile when prompted.

It isn't as good as watching on my phone but by golly it's a lot better than nothing!

(I'm posting this here because it's the top thread when I search for casting from a child account. I'm hoping this helps out someone that, like me, was trying to figure this out. Happy VRing!)

Hi! Your post seems promising however, I have not seen the prompt when signing in on the web browser to choose a child's profile in order to have the casting.  Anything else you can add to help get us other frustrated parents on the same board? 🙂 Thanks!

  • Found a work around to see what your kids are doing via a web browser:

    In chrome browser, go to:

    https://www.oculus.com/casting

Logo in using the kids account.

    Then in the headset:

Press the Meta button on your controller to open the universal menu

    Go to Camera

    Select Cast

    Select the URL "https://www.oculus.com/casting"

and you should see their screen in the web browser.

    Very useful function.

Unfortunately this doesn’t work for either of my kids accounts. It just spins as if it wants to load but then doesn’t ever cast.

  • Absolutely daft! Meta Quest 2 is registered with my parent account (like on the other consoles). Cannot cast from the headset when our kids are logged in with their accounts. "Dad can you help with...". No, I can't because I can't cast to see what my kid's doing. Meta Dev Team... need to find a way for the Family Members to get casting working on a single headset that is registered to the parent. What's happening now is a complete design failure! Looking forward to seeing your working solution, and hopefully soon. Thank you.
