This was something i noticed from the start. I thought it was intentional to prevent something for some reason, like copyright or monetary incentives. The other plausible explanation is hardware limitations, because of tracing needing special camera to increase accuracy. For me it seems little the light sensitivity is WAY high. if i reduce screens brightness they become readable, but quality is still bad. This leads me to presume that its about increasing tracing accuracy. Not least because ppl have been complaining of bad tracking. However it should be possible to add a layer or filter for the users passtrough view, to make it more usable? Or maybe not due to the hardware limitatoins of this middle to low segment hardware quality and the nessecery prioritisations. This is the third explanation, or at least the reason for the second theory.
Also the passtrough video seems like highly processed for some reason. The image bends and morphs around objects, similar to light from stars bending around massive gravitational objects. But it looks glitchy and random. Maybe also a result from tracking processing, but seems a bit counter intuitive.
If it could be fixed i guess it would have already. I presume it also could be the result of the third theory mentioned above.. Theres gonna have to be priorities and sacrifices made to get the quest commercially viable. At least in this technological stage of development.
However, as some point out, as it is an important sales incentive, there should be some alternative priority to prefer, if people are returning their headsets due to this issue.
Hoping for a fix. I'm sure the devs are doing all they can. Though, I think they should start by admiting that there is a problem, not just talking about the the light conditions. Not least becase its obvious for everyone to see that it is. A serious issue that need to be addressed asap if possible.
One solution could be to priovide users that want to have a pristine passtrough view to be able to get a tiny extra external camera to be mounted somwhere on the front of the headset. Cheap or free of charge. At least it should be possible to add a webcam by the user, trough the usb port. This could also serve as a way to address another issue, the lack of possibility to make video calls with the headset. Im very surprised they havent been able to enable this in facebook, messenger and instagram yet, not least because meta owns and develops these applications! Should be fairly straight forward to get it done. But as mentioned earlier, maybe due to some unavoidable limitations. But as said above, there have to be plausable workarounds. And to prevent bad PR and ppl returning their sets now that many have got it as christmas gifts, it should be a prioritized issue! Also, a virtual camera to be able to show ones own meta avatar should ofcourse be there already. Also, tis functionality should also be implemented directly in the home environment in the set. That is what its supposed to function as, a virtual home for work and leasure. Now it feels more like a quite sparsly usable feature for showcase the set. Dont let it stop there, go forward!
