Hey everyone! The engineering team has been reading feedback and doing some testing on this topic. We've found that the most common cause of any passthrough noise or unexpected quality is due to the amount of lighting in the room. To get the best experience with passthrough, check out our article here.
The team is still interested in everyone's feedback and will continue to analyze passthrough performance.
Morning, Im having the same issue with my new Quest 3.....The pass through is basicly the same as the Quest 2 quality but with colour. Terrible to be fair. Really dissipointed. I have watched all these vids online before relese and they look great. My Q3 looks pants, Just so grainy and i have all lights on. Im hoping its not faulty, but looking at mine it doesnt look right. Its basicly un-playable on AR, blurry mess. Im thinking i may have to send it back, what was the point of the selling point if its this bad. Really dissapointed!
I am worried that a few of you may have received defective units. Here is an example of Quest 2(clearly) and the Quest 3. I am hoping that the issue is resolved for you all and if a replacement needs to happen that can be taken care of quickly!
Has nothing to do with influences, the pass through advertised from Meta and what you call influencers made it look like it was maybe not amazing but beyond acceptable.. Possibly faulty units or a software update that some units got already upon release and others have not got yet.. possible your unit is acceptable but I do share my opinion with others about the very poor quality of the pass through, it is like the Q2 but in colour
Is anyone else having problems with their Quest 3 Passthrough Quality? After all the hype and online AR Videos Pre-Release i was so Hyped. But unfortunalty im so dissapointed with the 1996 Nokia 5210 Video Quality passthrough, it looks absolutly nothing like the clips or Reviews. Its bassicly like my Quest 2 but in colour, Grainy, blurry mess. And before anyone says its the lighting. I have tried it durring the day and with lights on and its still bad. AR is not realistic since all the grain and blurry background sucks. Could this be a faulty unit? or is this the norm? I have watched all these videos online and its hardly mentioned. The whole selling point is AR..... But its bad! Am i the only one?
I don't own a Quest 2. The Quest 3 is my first VR headset, so I have no comparison. But my first impression was also that it is very grainy and blurry. It's almost impossible to read anything on my phone with this passthrough quality, for example.
I wasn't sure if this was normal, but I was really a bit disappointed. I thought the quality would be better. Like this the mixed reality is not such a great experience.
Ive send my quest 3 today back because of this.. im one of the reddit user that has massive problems with their quest. Support was very very awful and unfriendly in my case. I had problems with fisheye/warping issues + i can see the grid with an resolution of a N64 game. Very unclear from one moment to the other. Support means i should clear my bluetooth cache... hah....
Edit: Passthrough Quality is under N64 graphic niveau in my case..
Would have been useful to post a photo of the problem Strelok1993 just so we have something to compare. I've also heard that some types of artificial lighting can throw the cameras off. If anyone who thinks they have a problem could say whether they're using natural light, modern LEDs, older CFLs maybe low frequency ones, incandescent (filament bulbs), fluorescent tubes... just in case there's a corelation. Anyway, I'll post my photos in just a minute.
OK here are my comparison photos. I was going to do them through the lens but it's very difficult to do without distortion, reflections and shutter strobing so did screen capture instead. You also can't to a shot of your phone unless you have two phones. But I did put a Quest 3 through-the-lens shot that came out ok at the end, just for completeness.
So, same as kojack really. A moderate step up from the Quest Pro and obviously no real comparison with the Quest 2. Overall very usable, was able to set up with the phone app, enter my wifi password from the little router sticker, without taking the headset off at all.
This room wasn't overly bright, it's overcast outside and 3 x 6W warm-white LED lamps.
I have a really hard time believing it's this good considering the quest 2 pass-through looks like you just edited it to be b&w. Never had a quest 2 look that crisp and non-warped ever. I've used my friend's and had 2 myself. None of them ever had pass-through that good. I can hardly tell how close I am to objects. My parents recently got a quest 3 and I was kinda disappointed. It was still blurry and warped like the guest 2 and had a giant line of discoloration that would move around making the top and bottom look completely different. I hope that was a one time bug. Looks like the hardware is still not good and the software is worse than the 2 somehow. It looked the same as the quest 2 but with color slapped on. Not worth double the price imo.
Oh for sure i have photos. The thingy is via the photos and video i cant show you the exact lines that i can see (not similiar with the normal grid we know). Again - first setup with quest 3 was overwhelming with the quality - then something happend and now it looks like the photos & video.Far away from your photos. tested with normal light /
without light / massive led light and without led.
And for the record - the pictures are done with an Fold5 - Camera is very good.
unfortunately i cant insert the youtube video - search for
I have to say, I'm confused. Can you point out the issues in some of the photos Strelok1993 ?
I've watched the video - I also don't really see any issues there (apart from the expected warping at the edges) - unfortunately of course it's often difficult unless we look through your headset ourselves.
Yea thats exactly what i meaned, hard to see on the pictures but you really cant see the unsharpen lines or the ghosting? :D. how i describe it.. the advantage that i have is that i have seen both sides. The side that was really perfect and sharp and clear. Nothing was there - no grid, no fisheye, no flickering, no ghosting.
The other side from the story began since i conntected the Quest via computer - thats only a supposition from my side. Steam VR worked too a little bit of time. It was overwhelming how sharp all things looked. I cant tell really what caused the Quest to go into this weird mode..
Im very sure when you take pictures from the lines on the setup - or from the ufo game - it looks very sharpen unlike mine photos. I cant barely read some textes or lines that were sharp before and are now without anti aliasing and have 999 edges. Or the controller photo on the table - i know that this was before ultra sharp and with less blurry. That wasnt before. Hard to see but the menü text is also very unsharpen when you have the quest on. Quality from the controller are also hard to see - but theres definitely a difference. The warping issue isnt only on the edge, its over the complete display - like i drink 2 vodka bottles at once.. you cant see that unfortunately not good via the video 😧
Edit: When im taking this photo to comparison - you cant tell me that this looks okay from the quality.. ? Its sharp photographed from my smartphone. On the first setup the beam was a beam and the controller was ultra sharp and not a paint brush beam and paint brush controller afterwards 😄
Edit 2: Curios thingy -> the factory reset menü screen is slighly unsharpen but sharper than all of the photos above. Maybe its a software bug thats not going away with an factory reset?... hmm.
My pass-through image is awful too. I cannot read anything: monitor, phone, not even keyboard caps. It is so bad I checked if there were plastic protections on the cameras. I think it's impairing hands detection too, my fingers on screen position is almost always a little bit off, even if I move my hands slowly.
