Link broken again cable unrecognized

Link will not function.  Now saying the cable is a 3rd party charge only cable.  It is not.  Cable I purchased with the headset.  3rd issue in 2 weeks.  What are you people doing at work?  Test this stuff, actually Test it before you update.  You look like the fools at Microsoft with Update Tuesday.  It's embarrassing and unacceptable.  Just loaded Steam Link and Steam VR.  Works great.  You Should be ashamed of yourselves but you will not.  Really sad.  My next headset will not be your product if you don't get your acts together.

Look, I get the frustration - nothing kills the VR vibe faster than a cable deciding it wants to identify as something else today. But just to save you from a few more gray hairs: the cable that ships with the headset is only a USB 2.0 charging cable, not a USB 3.0 data cable. It's great for powering the headset, but it simply doesn't have the bandwidth for Link, no matter how sternly you lecture it.

So when the system says "charge‑only cable," it's not gaslighting you - it's just telling the truth with the emotional sensitivity of a brick.

Steam Link works because it uses Wi‑Fi, not the cable. Totally different pathway, totally different requirements.

Grab an actual USB 3.0 Link‑compatible cable and you'll be back in business without needing to write the next great VR tragedy.

steve_40 Those that try to identify as something they're not is annoying but can't work unfortunately. I was at the bank last week, identifying as a billionaire but they still wouldn't give me the money for the Super yacht I saw for sale in Fenerbahçe marina in Istanbul. I was very disappointed.. I thought we could identify as what we want and people would accept it. Ah well, another bubble burst 🙄

Oh absolutely - if the bank won't respect your billionaire identity, it's time to escalate with the full dramatic flair of the original post.

Next time you walk in, I recommend:

        • Marching straight to the counter and announcing, with great sorrow, that your inner super‑yacht owner is being oppressed.
        • Demanding they "test their systems - actually test them" because clearly their balance checker is bugged.
        • Insisting that your account is not a "third‑party, charge‑only account," no matter what their screen says.
        • Informing them that if they don't get their act together, your next bank will not be their bank.
        • And of course, dramatically loading the banking equivalent of Steam Link - maybe a piggy bank - and declaring, "See? This works flawlessly!"

I'm sure they'll be devastated and immediately hand over the yacht money. After all, it's embarrassing and unacceptable that they don't recognize your billionaire status.

        🙃😁

  • Link system update.  Quick history.  I pre-ordered a 3S when it came out.

Same cable from them for years.  Last June 2025 was the last time it worked properly.  Every "update" since has been a problem.  It's the software not the cable...tried a New Meta 3.0 cable same result.  Says it is a charge only cable.

Gave up, used Steam wirelessly.  Plugged in a 10 foot $10 USB C from Wal-Mart to charge while playing...Link works.  I could just scream so loud you could hear me on the moon.  Get your freaking acts together Meta your stuff is junk.  Good golly do you test at all?

    I weep for you all.

Shopping actual VR headsets my grandkids can have this....

Just to toss another data point into the chaos: I've been using a Quest 3 since mid‑2025 with the official USB‑3 Link cable and use Link (and also Airlink), and everything has behaved normally through every update. No "charge‑only" drama, no sudden cable identity crises.

That's why I'm not convinced this is some grand software apocalypse. You had one cable that worked for years and then died, a brand‑new official cable that also reports as charge‑only, and then a random $10 Walmart special that does work for Link. That's not the pattern you'd see if Meta broke Link for everyone - that's the pattern you see when the cable gods decide to smite you twice in a row.

USB‑C is great until it isn't, and sometimes a brand‑new cable is a lemon straight out of the box. I get why you're fed up, but this really doesn't look like a universal Meta meltdown. It looks like you just rolled two unlucky cables back‑to‑back. At least Steam Link is keeping you sane while the universe sorts out its vendetta.
