Meta horizon completely unusable

I just spent $300 on a new quest 3, and I can't even use it because the app is garbage. I might as well just return it at this point, I have spent the past 2 hours researching ways to get the app to run just long enough for me to set up my quest and after uninstalling and reinstalling and restarting my phone tens of times nothing has changed. Why would you even require a mobile app???? That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard, why can't I just set it up through the computer??? I don't use apple, I have an Android phone, it's fully up to date with plenty of storage so there's nothing wrong on my end, it's the app.

It's wild how often people think "venting loudly" is the same thing as "asking for help." They post tons of frustration, zero actionable info. It's basically the tech‑support equivalent of shouting into a pillow.

What's funny is that if they had just written something like:

    • What phone model they're using
    • What Android version
    • What the app actually does (crashes? freezes? won't install?)
    • Whether they tried clearing cache/data
    • Whether they tried using the headset's built‑in setup flow

…they'd probably get a useful answer in minutes.

Instead, they go straight to "this is the dumbest idea ever" and "I'm returning it," which shuts down any chance of troubleshooting. It's like going to a mechanic and saying, "My car is stupid and broken, fix it," without mentioning that the fuel tank is empty.

I've seen several posts today from people having crashes in the Android app, so it must be a bad update.

I've submitted a report through my phone app (iOS version) to tell Meta there's an issue with the Android update. Hopefully they will take note. If you're able to get the app to open, use the option in the app to report a problem.

If possible, try a different phone or even a tablet or borrow one from a friend for 5 minutes just to set up the headset. The Meta Horizon app is working flawlessly on my iPhoneSE (iOS 26.3.1).

  • Yes, it is very unstable and stutters quite a bit. I can understand the frustration. Once you can get your headset set up, it's usable, though not great. How old is your phone, you should preferably be on at least Android v14, older than that can cause issues even though they say it won't. I've a Samsung S25 ultra on version 16 and it's far from perfect. It was better until recent updates totally messed it up. However I factory reset recently and despite the app not being perfect it went through the install process smoothly for me.  As a possible fix, at least to get the install done, try deleting the cache in the app, it gets up to more than a GB sometimes.. You can also try reinstalling the app and immediately clearing the cache after signing in and try again. The install problem is likely related to your phone or even your WiFi, so check them too. Make sure you device is on the same Wifi network and it should preferably be 5ghz. Good luck.
