Meta Quest 3 freezes the router

My wifi bought the Meta Quest 3 to our son. It is updated but I can't seem to get it to work with our home network, the Meta Q 3 destroys the network every time.

We have a Zyxel Air FWA510 5G modem/router (Wifi 6), excellent 5G reception, stable, fast, everything runs smoothly, 4k streams on Chromecast, Xbox series X gaming etc until... my son turns on the Meta Quest 3, after 2-15 minutes everything freezes and the router has to be rebooted.

Went through all available router setting, found nothing that helped, created separate networks, switched between 2,4 GHz and 5,0 GHz and no differences, updated to the latest firmware. Can't turn off QoS in the router settings. The router is 1-2 meters from the VR-set, so literally as close as you can get. We don't do any PC-gaming, only built in games.

If a create a wifi hot-spot on my phone, it all runs smooth (same carrier/isp as the 5G router). What should I do??

  • Would a wired connection to an access point solve this issue? Thinking about buying the Zyxel NWA50BE PRO, Wifi 7, 6GHz access point and use it just for the Meta Quest 3. Or would it too destroy my router when the Meta Q 3 connects to the AP?

  • Any tips on brand/models of Access points that works great with the MQ3 are appreciated. Preferable on the 6Ghz network with the other networks (2,4 and 5 Ghz turned off).

  • Installed the Access point Zyxel NWA50BE PRO (wired connection from my router) and gave i a separate 6Ghz, Wifi 7 network (I know it becomes Wifi 6e for the Meta Q 3), it works better, but my Google Nest Audio stopped working and the the network became sluggish after an hour of plating.

Did you see the reply to you in the other thread?

If that's not the problem, then at this point I'd be suspecting the headset might be faulty and trying to get an exchange from the retailer.

I use an older Huawei HG659 router with no issues at all on 5 GHz and AirLink is working quite nicely for PCVR gaming (even with family simultaneously watching YouTube etc). I might get a 1-2 second freeze maybe every 30 minutes, which could easily be eliminated by using wired Link, but I can't be bothered 🙂.

  • The Meta Quest 3 seems to work better now, when it is using a separate Access Point (Zyxel NWA50BE PRO ), Im not fully done evaluating this new setup though.
