Meta Quest Link -- Incompatible Graphics Card

Hello,

I am a developer trying to use Unity on my Windows 11 laptop to develop VR apps for the Meta Quest 3.

To run my project on the headset, I downloaded the Meta Quest Link app. When I open this app, it gives me a warning saying "Your system's graphics card is incompatible with the Rift system software" with a link to https://www.meta.com/help/quest/articles/headsets-and-accessories/oculus-rift-s/rift-s-minimum-requirements/#specs. When I try to connect to my headset using AirLink, I get a similar message.

I went into Task Manager and found that GPU 0 is "Intel (R) UHD Graphics" and that GPU 1 is "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 with Max-Q Design", the latter of which I believe meets the minimum requirements (said to be "NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti" at that link). I went into the NVIDIA Control Panel and set "OculusClient.exe" to use GPU 1 and can verify that this app is using GPU 1 in the Task Manager (in the "GPU Engine" column).

Why am I still experiencing this error?

Please let me know if any other info from me would be helpful. Thanks!

  • Hey ijoffe! It looks like you're viewing the Rift & Rift S system requirements page. For Meta Quest Link specifically, you'll want to look at our Requirements to use Meta Quest Link page. It doesn't look like non-super 1650 series NVIDIA cards are supported for Meta Quest Link, which would explain the error you're running into.

Thanks for clarifying! So what exactly are the repercussions of not having a required graphics card on my computer? Am I still able to run apps on the Meta Quest 3? Thanks for the help!

No worries, I'm happy to provide more clarity! It depends which side of the spectrum you're on for the unsupported hardware. There are some higher end GPUs that have yet to be supported, such as AMD's 7000 series. Those will typically run into error messages stating that their GPU is unsupported and that they may experience performance issues. However, looking at user feedback, they seem to run just fine.

When it comes to being below the minimum specifications, not only will your performance vary heavily, but the Meta Quest Link app may deny you the ability to use it altogether.

There's 2 types of errors related to GPUs that you'll run into on the Meta Quest Link app.

One is a blue banner stating that your performance may be impacted, but you should still be able to launch and play apps just fine.

The second error is a full screen error message stating that your GPU is not compatible—not allowing you to launch any apps or experiences within the Meta Quest Link app.

Since the hardware altogether isn't supported, there won't be much I nor MetaStoreHelp will be able to help with in terms of optimization and/or getting it to work properly. Your main options would be to upgrade to a compatible GPU based on our requirements, or to continue using a third-party PCVR software for testing your application.

      Thanks for the info!

I get a red banner at the top of the app:

When I try to connect my Meta Quest 3, I get a message very similar to that second screenshot but in the headset itself. So, I think my GPU is just incompatible.

What are the major drawbacks to testing my application by just building it and running it directly on the headset directly with a cable compared to testing it using PCVR? Is it mainly that it takes more time to re-build the project into an app for each testing iteration, or is there other factors I should be aware of? Thanks!

I had red banner too for months, but I could perfectly run my unreal engine in play in vr in editor with link but just today after an update I think, I just get that black screen that says Graphics card not compatible, I mean for god sake if I had a compatible graphic card I wouldn't go buy a standalone headset, I been developing for almost a year without a problem with just that red banner above but now I don't know how to make it work. I'm trying to do and learn hand tracking and it's so hard to package and install every time for quest or using MetaXRSimulator, how can I just go back to that red banner state?

(I have a similar problem to OP)

"...not allowing you to launch any apps or experiences within the Meta Quest Link app."
I understand that stuff will not launch/run, but does that error banner message ALSO mean that it won't even PAIR via 'Add Headset' in the first place?
MQDH on the same PC paired with my headset fine, and Cast/etc all works in it (except Link).  Meta Quest Link will show that message, and I can not get the headset paired with it to begin with, so I'm just wondering if, when it throws that error, will it even BOTHER to try and pair devices...

Hello, JLsoft! Encountering an error with the headset is not ideal and we can look into this together. To start we would want to try pairing the headset with the app directly before using the link cable. Please go through the steps below:

        1. Ensure the phone is compatible with the Meta Quest App
        2. Ensure the phone app and headset are on the latest available version
        3. Ensure phone and headset are connected to the same network
        4. Remove any unsupported third-party accessories that may affect communication (such as headset covers)

If you still encounter issues with pairing with the headset and phone directly, please let us know and we can investigate further.

The Meta Quest Link app worked on my PC, although I had an unsupported GPU (A2000). But with the latest update I did today, I cannot start the app anymore. It tells me, that my graphics card is not supported. So I cannot use Meta Quest Link anymore. Sorry guys, but this is unacceptable. It worked before, it should continue to work. I cannot buy a completely new device, just because Meta now thinks that a graphics card may not fully meet the requirements although in fact it does serve me well enough.

I want to preface this by saying I'm not a developer, so I'll have very limited information when it comes to development related questions. I think the biggest drawback would be the iteration time compared to using the Meta Quest Link app.

I've seen developers in the past run their test builds locally by transferring the project to the headset using a sideloading method too, but I'm fairly certain that would require developer verification to get started with. I think these two pages from our developer docs would be a good place to start:

For more information, I think you'll gain a lot more insight by asking developer peers on the Developer Boards.

  • My experience was that it would seemingly pair, but i was never able to get apps over to the headset or anything useful, really. Also, now in my Horizon app, it tries to install things to my computer. I can't Launch, Get, or anything.

  • Hello! I am a new user of Meta Quest 3 and I am having a problem with Meta Quest Link. I am getting the same message "incompatible video card" even though I have an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 video card (I leave here a link with the PC specifications). I am looking forward to some solutions. Thank you!

  • I can't for the life of me understand why the Link App refuses to work on a system with two graphics cards, when one is unsupported, but the second one is supported?

I have  a laptop with an Intel Arc video card and an NVIDIA 4070TI.  The Link App sees the Intel card and refuses to work, even though the NVIDIA is fully supported.  In the NVIDIA control panel, I've directed the Link app to use the NVIDIA card, and I can confirm when it starts, it's associated with the correct GPU, but it still refuses to work?!

It's been over a year with this problem, and there seems to be no forward motion here.
