Quest 3 link cable keeps disconnecting

I just got my new Quest 3 3 days ago. When I connected it through Oculus link app and a genuine Oculus link cable to my PC the connection dropped almost immediately. After reconnecting I noticed that even the slightest movement of the plug of the link cable (while it is plugged in) results in a disconnection. This makes connecting to a PC with a link cable practically unusable as almost every time I move I get disconnected.

I want to add that there is nothing wrong with the cable. I use the same cable to connect to my old Quest 2 and my link connection is absolutely solid. Have I been just very unlucky or is there a design flaw or fault of the USB port on the Quest 3 headset?

I had a chat via live support. I am now expecting an email from the support. I guess I will need to wait to see what happens next...

  • First, make sure you are using a good-quality cable. I use a genuine Oculus link cable, but I still got disconnections.

This is what I did to fix it: I got myself an adapter. Link cable fits tighter into the adapter than if directly plugged in into the headset. The adapter also plugs tighter into the headset. I also designed and 3d printed a clip that firmly holds the cable so the plug does not move at all when I move my head.

Have you had any resolution with this? I think I am having a similar issue as Ill be in PCVR and it seems to crash in headset but the game on my PC doesnt crash. I have to disconnect the link and reconnect it and restart the game

I don't think your issue is similar to mine. My problem was that the connection between the cable plug and USB port on Quest 3 was quite loose and my cable kept getting disconnected. I solved this by using a small USB C to USB C adaptor which seems to give me a firmer connection. I also 3d printed a clip that holds my cable in place so there is no movement at the cable-quest connection. It is just a shame that the design of the Quest 3 USB port is so bad that the headset can not be used as a PC VR headset without users engineering their way of securing the physical connection. About 30 minutes of tinkering with CAD software and about 15 minutes of 3d printing solved what Oculus designers could not properly design.

its a brand new charger but thats not the main issue even with the cord not plugged in im having all the other issues

  • I was using the Meta cable for nearly a year and then one day out of the blue it started causing USB port failures. These showed up as USB3 ports only reporting being USB2.

I have just bought a INIU 16ft powered cable and it seems to work much better. The plug is as tighter fit in the headset and my bit rate has gone up from 2.3Gbps to 2.8.

  • I have v69 update and I am constantly dropping wiifii connection on the Qwest 3 , it connects then disconnects, I have tried everything.

      Hi there,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We would be more than happy to assist you.

Make sure you're using a good quality cable.

If you're using a genuine Oculus Link cable, but it keeps disconnecting.

Here's what we recommend to fix this:

      Try getting an adapter.

The link cable fits better into the adapter than if it were plugged directly into the headset.

The adapter also fits more snugly into the headset.

The idea is to make the cable as stable as possible to avoid any potential disconnection.

If the problem persists, please contact us privately as we may require advanced troubleshooting measures.

  • Hi. I bought an Anker fiber optic USB-C to C link cable. The cable looks good quality and durable and it was packed well. The think is when I am using it it disconnects from 5 to 10 minutes into the game. I have plugged it into my laptop's type-c port which is stable with other cables and hasn't been used like even 10 times for 1.5 years since I bought this laptop. So I don't suspect the ports or the cable but something is off. I want to troubleshoot instead of returning it if possible. I don't want to deal with extra accesories. It is already supposed to work after you pay that much to quest 3 and a premium link cable.

  • Same here. Quest 3 link keep disconnecting.

The cable is fixed so it's not the connector issue. Tried different cables, didn't help.

Sometimes it works fine for hours, sometimes I have disconnects every 20 minutes.

    Absolute garbage.

  • Same thing has started happening to me recently, from maybe a couple months or more back. It was working for quite some time with no issues as I recall, but suddenly I can't count on the connection working and end up getting booted out of any PC VR games I'm running randomly. Not great. And, to make matters worse, I just went and spent £2000 on a new PC because I was sure it was something to do with my old PCs USB C connection or something, but it's not, because when I plug my USB C external storage drive in there it works just fine. I'm now going to have to return that PC. Why can't all this stuff just work. How nice would that be.

same for me. My cable connection crashes randomly too. On one day its fine and on others it crashes every ten minutes or sometimes even immediately after rift connect.
What i notice is that when i reconnect rift PC link without replugging the headset i have a laggy and stuttering connection with only around 300-400Mb/s.
I have these issues for a couple of months now, wich was already annoying. But since about a week its gone really bad. Crashes over crashes..

I´ve already tried a lot to solve this:
      - tested cable connection speed in the Oculus App: Has around 2.8 -3.3 Gb/s when its running as intended
      - ALL drivers are up to date
      - Checked if a loose USB plug was causing disconnects with no results. I can even wiggle the plugs a bit without disconnecting.
      - plugged to different slots: USB 3.0/3.5
-Set all my USB port energy management settings to "always on"
I first tried it with only the port where the headset is connected to.
      - Headset factory reset
      - Oculus App repair
      - Oculus App clean uninstall and reinstall following the steps in the following link including to remove any leftover Oculus folders: Quest Link keep crashing a few seconds after launc... - Meta Community Forums - 1176444

it still randomly crashes and its getting worse..
last option is t try a new cable.

      Ryzen7 7800X3D

      64gb RAM 6000Mhz

Five USB devices are connected: Mouse, Keyboard, Flightstick, Throttle, Rudderpedals, Headset

        Hi Turbonix,

Thanks for reaching out about this!

Could you try removing any third-party accessories that you currently have plugged in? We would recommend trying with the bare minimum of USB devices connected to your PC (i.e. just keyboard, mouse and headset.)

Also, could you confirm what device you are using? Are you using the Oculus Rift S, the Oculus Rift or the Quest 3?

Hope to hear back from you soon, Turbonix!

  • Hi i´m on Q3
and i think I had a loose connection on my headset a well..
I just plugged in the cable "upside down" into the headset and I did not have any disconnects for the last 4 hours.
    I really hope thats it.

  • Having the exact same issue. It definitely seems to be related to the physical connection of the cable and device. I also think heating/cooling of the device is impacting the connection issue. Once it disconnects, it takes a medium tap on the cable to push it into the device and it immediatly reconnects, and will stay on as long as there's 0 motion. This is 100% about the physical connection.

The port always has some give when it's plugged in (tried with 2 cables, all possible orientations) so I'm going to try the adapter option that will hopefully give a tighter fit.

This feels like a product design issue that will not be resolved, which is why there's no way to support it. Very disappointing 😞

  • They will never fix your problem. I've been having issues like this for years with the Quest 2. I've notice the accepted solution. I also noticed someone else offered that solution. I have been asking about an issue concerning my display window being too high when I record video. I asked about this over 2 years ago. You would think they found a solution by now. You will just get an email every 6 months from a new representative asking the same question about your issue. I'll probably get another email for responding to this. I still use my Quest 2. I found this thread because my headset disconnected one hour into a 3 hour DCS mission I was testing out. Meta's tech support sucks. I would suggest finding a non Meta headset. After today, that's what I'm doing.
