Quest Link unusable due to network issue

Hi there.

For some weeks, the Quest/PC link had stopped working for me, with the link app hanging at various stages on the PC and in the headset. That was frustrating, because it had worked before.

Just today I found the culprit may be a network security change at my work location. On the surface, the change results in a rather slow start of the (wired) network connection, when booting up the PC.

Now, it seems that the network behaviour leaves the Oculus Windows service in a broken, unrecoverable state. The solution was to set the Oculus service start type to "manual" and only start the service after the network connection is fully up and running.

I find it very troublesome that the link software never indicated any such problems (except from being unresponsive in general).  This occured at least with the last three versions, the currently installed on being "Meta Quest Link-App 79.0.0.1094.381".

Regards

no private message...everyone is having a problem with your last set of updates. You are frustrating your users. Please fix your software so that PC can link to the oculus again. THANKS

  • To summarise: The OVR service stayed in an permanent unresponsive state here, after booting the machine.

After intensive testing, I found two working solutions:

    1. To set the Oculus service start type to "manual" and only start the service after the network setup is complete, and then the Link app.
    2. To set the Oculus service start type to "automatic (delayed)" and only start the Link app after network setup is complete.

Your are welcome. My installation is not in the English language, but I think, you basically go to the Windows services panel (e.g. type 'services' in the Windows taskbar search), then find  'Oculus VR Runtime  Service' from the list, and right-click for properties. Change start type to either manual or automatic(delayed).

        Reboot.

After reboot, in any case wait for network to be functional.

Then, in the "manual start" case, open services again, right-click and choose "Start", and then start the Link app.

Or, when using "Automatic(delayed)" start, just wait after boot-up that the network has become functional before starting the Link app.
