Random pixelated bars when using oculus link

I bought an Oculus Quest 2 about 6 months ago and it has been working fine either standalone or using oculus link (I use a Kiwi Cable for this). I stopped playing it for a little while but for the last 2 weeks or so, randomly a pixelated bar will sometimes show at the top and bottom of the screen, they look really low resolution but the centre of the screen is always perfectly clear. The monitor that mirrors the gameplay has no issues either. Most of the time they go away after a few minutes, but there has been one occasion where the bars seemed to 'grow' over the entire screen and couldn't see until I completely restart the Quest 2. This only happens when using link, not had any issues with standalone games.

Has anyone else had this issue or know how to fix it?

Greetings! This definitely seems like an odd issue, have you been able to try using any other cables to see if you have the same experience? We look forward to your response, we'll do what we can to help you get this working again!

I don't have another can cable long enough to try. I don't believe it is the cable as it was working fine previously, and surely if it was an issue with the cable the whole screen would be showing as pixelated/compressed, not just a few sections? I've also ran the link test via the software and this states the cable is acceptable to use with a fast enough transfer rate.

Hi Blue, we're dedicated in helping you get over this pixelation hurdle. go ahead and restart your headset and then try the following:

         Restart Oculus VR Runtime Service:

        1. Press Windows + S, type “services. msc” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
        2. Once in the services tab, search for the service “Oculus VR Runtime Service”. Right-click it and select.

After following the above steps, restart your PC. Reach out to us via a Meta Quest Support ticket if you still experience pixels. We're here to help!

When I spoke directly to Oculus support, they told it was because I was on Windows 11 and that isn't supported. Although I've not had the issue in about a month now so maybe they patched it somewhere?

  • I have this issue on win 10, after suffering stuttering and jank it started to do this. I'm at my wits end with this.

  • The same thing just started happening to me. Sometimes it's either one pixelated line at the top, then it goes away and shortly comes back at the bottom, and then both the top and bottom are pixelated, but you can see clearly in the middle. I've tried restarting the headset and steam VR.

  • I have the same issue. At times it gets like I can see thru it and it almost hurts to look at. I'm going to try connecting through Virtual Desktop and see if that helps.

Hey there! Wrestling with graphical issues is no fun at all! Let's take a closer look and see if we can get that sorted.

Some users have had similar experiences, but found that adjusting their graphics settings got everything squared away. Here's a link that breaks down how to make that happen. Try adjusting your refresh rate, and see if that takes care of it!

If you still find yourself in the weeds, let us know. We'll be more than happy to look further into it with you.

I am still having this issue despite spending days trouble shooting through every possible solution I could find. Problem is, this is the only place online that covers this issue.

These are semi-transparent blurry pixelated bars that go across the screen vertically, appearing in random vertical locations at any given time. Sometimes they don’t bother much, and sometimes they completely distort the image impeding gameplay. Sometimes there are multiple bars across the screen.

        I’m using a 2017 iMac 32gb DDR 4.2GHz Intel Core i7 with a Radeon 580 running bootcamp Windows 10.

The cable I got is a Syntech.

Hi, I'm having the same issue, block of pixels, bars of big pixels, happening to be in my vision, sometime in a corner of the vision, sometimes right in the middle and it breaks the immersion

it's the first time I'm playing in VR since I changed every components in my PC, especially since I switched to an AMD graphic card, and I noticed that every one here who specified their components had one too, so it might be the issue, since I experience these pixelated bars since I'm on AMD GPU, never happened in 3 years with my Nvidia GPU

    For information, I have a AMD Ryzen 9 9950x3D, AMD Radeon 9070XT Nitro +, 32GB of RAM

Noticed this issue on VR Chat right now

Hello, I have this problem too. Like everyone else, it only happens to me in PCVR.
I can only play for a few minutes before these pixelated horizontal bars appear, everytime, on all PCVR games.
The bars mainly appear at the top and bottom of the screen, taking up its entire length and leaving the middle clear. However, if I continue playing, they eventually cover the entire screen.
The only solution I've found is to quit PCVR mode and restart it, but the problem reappears after a few minutes.
I'd like to point out that I've been using the headset in PCVR mode for about a year without any problems (same PC, same cable). The problem appeared suddenly – I left my headset aside for a while, and I've only been using it again for a few weeks.
Having to restart the link/games every 15 minutes is really annoying.

My configuration: AMD RX 6600 graphics card, Intel Core 12th Gen i3-12100F processor and 16 GB RAM. My games are on an SSD.

      Thanks in advance!
  • I have the same issue, never happened before. I think it might be AMD drivers. Its seems like it's only AMD card's having the issues. I have RX 6600

I found a bandaid fix for this. Go to the oculus debug tool (C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics) and open it up. Find "Sliced encoding" and "Link sharpening" and turn them both off. Fixed it for me, no idea if it'll continue to be a fix, but there it is. You could also try to join the public test channel. To do this you go to your meta quest link app, go to Settings > Beta and opt in for the public test channel. I did both.

Thanks for this fix, i gonna try as soon as i can.

Edit: I've just turn off "Sliced encoding" and "Link Sharpenning" in oculus debug tool, maybe it's just luck and i don't have try enough but it seems to have fix the problem.

        Thanks FoolyCooly !
