Thanks for you help and assuring message. I couldn't attach logs here because attachments with .zip extension are not supported. However, I have solved the problem, just going to leave my steps here in case anyone on the Internet stumbles upon this thread.

One of the how-to-solve " no sound after using Oculus / VR in Windows "

I realized that the sound is delivered via USB Type-C when Link is connected. So the driver of the USB 3.1 was still using the sound even after VR uncoupling. I had to uninstall the USB driver, reboot the PC and scan for hardware changes in the device manager - that solved the problem immediately, however I wish this could be fixed for Oculus because now I am paranoid to connect my headset via Link and need to create a system checkpoint prior connecting the VR.

Hey there, thanks for reaching out. We understand you are having sound issues with Oculus Link. It's certainly no fun having your device working properly one second and the next having audio issues, so I will do my best to help you find a viable solution.

There are several available troubleshooting steps you can use to help solve this issue.

First, make sure that your software is up to date and that the volume is not muted on the device and computer. Next, check the audio input and output sources for both your headset and on your PC.

To check the audio input and output for your Oculus Quest:

    1. Open the Oculus app on your computer.

    2. Click Devices in the left side menu and then select Quest and Touch.

    3. Below Audio Output in VR, make sure your Quest is selected.

To check the audio input and output for your PC:

    1. Click the Speaker icon  in the task bar in the bottom-right part of your screen.

    2. Click the ^ arrow to open a list of audio devices connected to your computer.

    3. Check that your audio and mic are both set to Oculus Virtual Audio Device.

Additionally, if you are using any third party VR software on your PC, make sure that Oculus Virtual Audio Device is set as your audio input and output source there as well.

I am having a similar problem with my PC and Oculus. After using the headset and shutting down the computer, the next time it boots it is set to Oculus for the sound output and my device (Denon receiver is not an option I can select in any of the settings sections). If I look in windows setting my Denon is showing as not connected. If I do a reboot all of my sound devices are back to normal. There has to be a better way to solve this.

      Hi There,

I am having a similar problem - no sound in Windows after using Oculus. The Oculus software/drivers are using the audio speaker even after disconnecting the Link. As a result, no sound in Windows. Tried selecting Speakers as a default, unchecked audio enhancements, reinstalling audio and NVIDIA driver, rebooting, stopping/starting audio service - nothing. When I try to Test the Speakers it pops up an error: Failed to play test tone. Please help!

        Good howdy, nikitqua!

Well it most certainly looks like you got yourself an internal error. Yeah, that just wont do! We need you to have the best time when going though your VR journeys! So let's get this all sorted out and get you back in the game (literally). For this we'll need to gather your logs, take a gander on into your system and give it the once over.

Here are the steps to gather your logs:

1.Open the Run window (Windows key + R).
        2.Enter and run: C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics\OculusLogGatherer.exe
*The above link is the default directory. Bear in mind that if you installed Oculus Home to another drive you will need to update the command with the correct file path.
3.Select the checkbox next to ‘Full logs’.
4.Select "1 day" from the "Collect last" drop down list.
5.Wait for the log collection to finish. This can take some time to complete.
6.The program will automatically generate a zip file containing your logs, which will be saved to your desktop automatically.
7.Attach the newly created zip file to your next support response.

Once you've roped those logs up, let's have you get in touch with our most awesome support agents here: https://metaque.st/Support. There, they will have an extensive amount of tools at their disposal, to better look into this. Res assured, we'll get you back in the saddle come the next rodeo!

The problem is that the quest automatically changes default device sound settings in windows. Is there a way to prevent the quest from making itself my default device when it’s plugged in? The nuisance of changing back my chosen settings outweighs the value of using this thing.

Hello there, captainschmoe! We understand you are wanting to set the default settings for the sound on your computer off of your Quest device when it is plugged in. We understand the importance of making sure your computer is able to function the way you want it to.

Due to this being a Windows-related issue, we do not have the tools necessary to provide you with an accurate answer. We recommend continuing to reach out to other users here on our forums page or searching outside of our forums.

  • I had similar issue and was able to resolve it. 1) I went to device manager --> Sound, video, and game controllers  and right clicked on Oculus Audio device and uninstalled the device (maybe I could have done disable?) 2) I clicked menu --> action --> scan for hardware device and it found my speakers, . 3) Then I clicked on speaker icon in the windows tray (bottom right hand) and clicked the carrot ^ and selected speaker as the output device. I have no idea what this will do when I next attempt to play via Oculus link, worst case I may have to reinstall.

For me i had the same problem, all i had to do was go into the "sound mixer options" in settings(can find it by search) and change my output and input devices back to my speakers from my Oculus

I was having same issue, I went into control panel/system/sound and changed output from "steam streaming speakers" to my "realtek high def audio"  .. problem solved...

  • I ran into this problem when trying to us my meta quest 2 for car x drift racing on my friends PC, I was able to get the audio back but I'm not exactly sure how but I know that I searched through all the audio devices and found system sounds in the oculus section. I only used the USB type c as a last resort and I think that's what changed the audio to the oculus so if you do try to use it again just try air link on the meta instead of the cable. The main thing that did it was finding where system sounds were and going into the audio settings to delete what the system sounds moved to and then find your main audio output and change it to what ever device you use for audio. This is just me trying to figure it out but it seems I was able to do more than other people on this thread so I thought I would say something.

Also to find where system sounds are on the PC, right click the volume icon in the bottom right of the task bar and go into volume mixer and look through all of those.

Hey nova.586173, thanks for adding those troubleshooting steps you went through! That is super helpful for other users searching here for help with the same issue.

  • So been getting a bunch of Email spam for this thread, hopped on to find that my 100% fix went overlooked.

So I am going to break it down and unsub from the thread. This fix also applies to Steam Link and Virtual Desktop because they all work the same way.

So the sound driver for the VR headset is a virtual mixer, it intercepts the audio and redirects it to the headset weather it is connected or disconnected and that is due to the software not being programed to automatically disable the mixer leaving the user to have to do it manually.

    SO here is the fix:

    Windows 10/11
*Win key + S to open search and type " Control panel "

    * once in old school control panel look to the upper right for * view by * click the drop down " category " and   select * Large or Small * icons

    * once that is done click sound and you will have the sound panel open

    * on the Playback tab disable these devices  ( Oculus virtual audio device / Steam streaming Speakers / virtual Desktop audio )
    * Recording tab disable these devices ( Oculus virtual audio device / Steam streaming Microphone / virtual Desktop audio )

once done you should have audio back to your default device.

Now when you want to use your headset you will need to re enable these devices again. So do create a shortcut to sound options on your desktop.

But it is the pain to do it manually every time after I disconnected Oculus. I don't believe that it can not be done programmatically.

I spent weeks trying to solve this problem, and never could. EVERY time I would use the Oculus, I would have to uninstall it in Device Manager and then redo all of my sound settings. In the end, it is just too frustrating and not worth it. I gave up on Oculus.

Hey there, Litigo and welcome to the community forums!

I can understand the frustration with this if you're uninstalling the Link app after every time you use the headset 😶

Have you tried Lizziezilla's workaround that they provided on page 3? It definitely sounds much more straight forward than uninstalling and reinstalling the app every time 👀
