TypeError: Cannot read property 'type' of undefined on Meta Horizon App - Quest 3S Pairing Issue

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing a critical issue with my new Meta Quest 3S and the Meta Horizon mobile app, and I'm unable to pair my headset. Whenever I try to initiate the pairing process from the app, it displays the following error message:

TypeError: Cannot read property 'type' of undefined

I have already tried the following troubleshooting steps, but the issue persists:

  • Restarting the Meta Horizon app.
  • Restarting my smartphone (Android).
  • Clearing app cache and data for Meta Horizon app.
  • Reinstalling the Meta Horizon app.
  • Restarting the Meta Quest 3S headset.
  • Trying the pairing process on another smartphone (same error occurred).
  • Ensuring both the smartphone and Quest 3S are on the same Wi-Fi network (5GHz band).
  • Ensuring Bluetooth is enabled on the smartphone and the devices are close.

Since the error appears on multiple devices, I suspect it's either an issue with my Meta account, the Quest 3S headset itself, or a deeper problem with the Meta Horizon app's server-side interaction.

I am unable to proceed with the initial setup and use my Quest 3S. I have also tried reaching out to Meta Support directly through their website, but I am unable to connect to a live chat agent.

Has anyone encountered this specific TypeError before during the initial Quest 3S setup or pairing? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Exactly same issue here. Brand new headset - unable to use it because I can't get into the app due to this error. Did you find a fix?

      over 24 hours of dealing with Meta support and trying many different things to fix this problem - I’m no further forward.

      support have so far been abysmal. I’ve explained the issue multiple times, had to send the same screenshot multiple times.. support then asked me about my “headset tracking issue” … erm..

      then - asked for a SCREEN RECORDING of the error in the app - because a SCREENSHOT isn’t enough?

       

      it’s laughable. I’ll likely be returning the Quest 3 on Monday - and the headset itself hasn’t even been turned on yet because of their awful app, and even worse support.

        And to top it off this MetaStoreHelp bot keeps diverting people to solve in secrecy instead of just working it out here with all of us having the same issues...

  • also getting this issue trying to open the app on the phone. Crashes to TypeError: Cannot read property 'type 'of undefined.

  • Update for you all - there is no update from me.

    Meta “support” has fallen completely silent on me after asking me the same questions in circles. 
    Still seeing the same error.

    What an awful experience for people trying to enjoy their new headsets. Hope potential buyers find this post!

    Same issue here, just took deliver of my 3s but cant use it because the horizon app has the same error: TypeError Cannot read property 'type' of undefined. Please post the solution here @metaSupport

    • I got a iPhone so go to settings…go to general…then to storage…then find meta horizon…then hit offload app let it do its thing and it should work after that

      My just started working by itself, I am using an IOS App

  • Ok.. posting my (I think) solution / workaround here. Not sure if it will last, but I have my account working for now. Hope this helps, let me know.

     

    i got annoyed waiting for Meta to offer any help at all - and I just made a fresh account. Made the fresh account and played some free games.

    I signed into this new account on the iOS app, and the headset.

    Then, the next day I thought I’d try my old account again. I went into the iOS app and switched account to my old one (which was getting the error) and it’s now working. I’ve been able to sign into my old account on the headset and so far, so good.
