USB 3.0 issues with Quest 2

I see lots of similar posts about things surrounding this issue but they usually get brushed off, I am hoping that making this post and outlining what I have done so far it may finally prompt a fix.

Essentially the issue is that when connecting with a USB 2.0 connection, the link is completely stable, it reliably connects for several hours and even if the headset is removed and left to "sleep", it reawakens and is still successfully connected (team events in iRacing if you're asking). When using USB 3.0 however, the exact opposite is true, generally speaking in the best case scenario, when keeping the headset awake the whole time, I can sometimes get an hour before a disconnect, however, nearly every time it goes to sleep, it disconnects and sometimes the connection will be lost within minutes of launching with no explanation.

For a bit of history, over the course of trying to find a solution to this issue I have: Used a USB A-C 3.0 cable, 2x USB C-C 3.0 cables (including Oculus' own), a USB A-C 2.0 cable, a USB C-C 2.0 cable, replaced my PC's motherboard with a Asus Prime Z-390A, so I would like to think this firmly rules out the frequently posed "solutions" such as better quality cables or using different ports. I have also tried resetting experimental features as I read that sometimes causes issues but this didn't have an effect, nor has making sure that video drivers and my motherboards firmware are up to date, disabled legacy USB support in my bios settings or ensuring there is no power saving settings activated on USB ports.

The most frustrating part of all is that recently I did a factory reset of the headset 'cause I couldn't think of any other fix and seemingly this finally gave me a stable USB 3.0 connection using the official cable, which not only lasted until I disconnected it (several hours), but also through cycles of sleeping and waking the headset. I then didn't play for a week and Oculus app version 38.0.0.51.727 (38.0.0.51.727) / headset version 38.0.0.63.727.351486028 installed themselves and now I'm back to the same problem of 3.0 not working and 2.0 being absolutely fine, the factory reset and experimental features reset has not had an effect this time.

To be clear, there have been no hardware changes at this time so given it did work as intended previously, it has nothing to do with cable quality or any mechanical issue. Any other insight of fixes that I have not yet tried would be appreciated, although mostly an indication that this is being sincerely looked into as a known issue not just brushed off as an outlier. Please let me know if you need any additional information and I'll post when I can.

  • Finally I got to the bottom of it. If you connect to the PC and it shows you are usb2 just pull the plug out of your headset and reconnect. Seems to be fine for me after that. Good luck people!!!

  • Just an FYI for all of you people with the USB issues. One of the reasons why this seems to happen all of a sudden is not so much the physical cable, that's easily testable by using it with another device, like a phone. USB connections to a PC have power-saving features built into the drivers. Your PC will shut off power to a USB device if it feels it isn't in use. Unfortunately, often the only solution is to unplug & replug the USB cable to re-awaken the 'over USB' power. You can do 2 things to help with this issue. Go into your PC's device manager. Identify the USB connection. (unplug it, wait a few seconds & plug it back in. You'll see it disappear & then reappear in the USB device list. Once identified right click on it and update the driver. Choose the online version. (An out-of-date USB driver is often the cause of this issue). Now, this is an additional... Once updated, where needed. Right-click the USB connection again & disable power saving on it.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't help. I just tried another high speed USB 3.2 cable on a different 3.2 port, and it acts the same.. seeing the headset as USB 2.0.

  • That's a different issue from the one the OP mentioned.

"I can sometimes get an hour before a disconnect, however, nearly every time it goes to sleep, it disconnects and sometimes the connection will be lost within minutes of launching with no explanation".

Remove all usb 3.* drivers from "universal serial bus controllers" on "device manager. Windows will reinstall it on restart and your Oculus Quest 2 will work fine again on usb 3.* I had the same problem and It only worked fine on USB 2.0, now It's perfect again. Best regards from Barcelona!

Does anyone have stable performance with a link cable?

My Intel C610 USB 3.0 ports on the motherboard report "USB Device not recognized" when I plug into them.  I have an ASMedia 3.1 card and it will work for a while on it until it disconnects.

The drivers on all USB ports are the latest.  The motherboard is an Asus 99X-A.

I'm not sure why an intel driver wouldn't recognize the device.  At one point, no USB ports would recognize it and I had to run the "Fix Installation" from the Occulus Setup/Installer.

  • It's so easy. I solved that problem yesterday, may be any windows update or something like that. You only have to go to Control Panel, device administrator, and remove all usb 3.* drivers (not disable, remove). Don't worry, when you restart Windows it reinstall correctly these drivers and Oculus Quest 2 works again! I hope it Solve your problem. Best regards from Barcelona!

  • So I just had the same problem with Oculus 3's.  Tried everything in this forum to no avail.  It was my Fiber Optic Link cable...run over too many times with office chair.  It didn't stop working, it just downgraded to USB 2.  Borrowed my neighbors cable, and boom, worked again.  So if you've tried everything else, like I did, maybe go back to the most obvious--the cable.

Most obvious? A cable going from USB 3.0 to USB 2.0 overnight shouldn't be "obvious". I'd like a reasonable explanation of how a USB 3.0 cable can fail "a little" and remain functional as a USB 2.0 cable. Does that make sense to you? This sounds like Quest has a buggy app and we're giving them a free pass by saying it must be our fault their **bleep** doesn't work like it's supposed to.

  • I am using the Freaking Overprice 80$ Cable still I have the same issue tried whole bunch of things from restarting to upading drivers to reinstalling etc still the same issue. The same cable with the same setup worked a month ago, recognizing it as 3.0 and everything, but now that I have worked on the headset again, it doesn't. This infuriating issue pops up. This is leading to Meta Quest Link not working ... not working at all with air link or wired

I am so angry that I am this close to punching a hole in the wall. If the headset were expensive, I would have yeeted it by now. I wasted an entire day because of this.

I am using the Meta Quest 3, with the official Wire, all drivers, software, and firmware of the headset updated, and still the same issue.

Thanks for replying a year later. I’ve upgraded WiFi (1 gig) and have gone completely wireless with Virtual Desktop. Runs way better than ever did through usb 3 fiber cable. So no longer issue for me.
