Unreal Engine 5.7 plugin or fork ETA?

Hi!

As I'm compiling 5.6 I was thinking of just checking if there is any sort of timeline or ETA on a potential UE 5.7 fork and/or a 5.7 compatible plugin?

It's probably a lot of work for Meta considering the improvements made in 5.7, but the nice features the 5.6 fork has would be really awesome to have in 5.7 as a sort of "new baseline", best of both worlds kind of deal.

I'm starting on a rather large project soon and I'm afraid that I'll be stuck on 5.6 if migration doesn't play nice, and by the looks of it 5.7 seems really promising performance wise as well but I'd love to have some of the features from the plugin to go with it.

Alternatively, if you have already started with 5.7 and have some indicators of whether or not migration is looking doable then I'd love to know.

Best regards
Morten

  • I'm interested as well. When we started, the 5.6 fork did not exist but we are considering to go from scratch so perhaps trying the 5.6 fork or the newest 5.7 regular version... Unless the 5.7 fork isn't too far away!

Are VR perfs really better in 5.7?

From my very limited testing it is. Some claim 25% over baseline 5.6, which would probably add up to about as performant as the 5.6 fork if you are using lights sparingly (unless they also did something similar for lights as Meta did in their fork). Documentation on what epic did with the mobile rendering in 5.7 is a bit sparse, so it's hard to compare the two.

I ultimately started working with 5.7 with the hopes that most can be migrated to a potential 5.7 fork, as of now I run VRE on standalone 5.7 and it performs pretty well out of the box with no baked lighting. Gonna do some more testing today with a denser, baked map. I figured it would be easier to migrate all gameplay related work to a 5.7 fork than to migrate a 5.6 fork to a 5.7 fork.

25% perfs would be great! I've started looking into Interaction SDK & Movement SDK, which would be very useful but only available on 5.6. at the moment !
