Languages- oh c'mon!

Am I the only one who thinks the choice of languages is not really useful?

OK, Spanish- sure, Italian-OK, German- hmmmm, French- What???, Portuguese-What???  I encounter Spanish speaking people everyday.  Italian- ok, lots of Italian restaurants, etc. and I probably come in contact with Italian speakers in my neighborhood, etc.  German- Not sure where that would be useful unless I went to Germany and the EU.  French-most of us don't go to fancy French restaurants or make jaunts to France and I never come in contact with a French speaking person here in the U.S.  Same for Portuguese.

The language that is needed, and would be most useful, is Mandarin/Chinese! No matter what I do or where I go there are Chinese speaking people.  I could use that everyday.  What was Meta thinking?  Replace the French with Mandarin/Chinese and replace the Portuguese with maybe Japanese or Vietnamese.

Some other glasses that will be coming out will include many more languages.  Meta- at lease give us languages we can use in daily life.

OK, maybe I'm the only one who thinks this.  I don't live in California, maybe French is super useful there?

Sigh.

  • If you want Mandarin, you will have to convince Chairman Xi to unban Facebook first 😁.

  • I agree.  start with languages that are widely used.   Chinese, Vietnamese definitely more used than Portuguese.. Over the weekend, I had 4 encounters with Chinese speakers.   I've never heard Portuguese outside of Brazil.  Come-on now Meta, prioritize better.

Just because you guys haven't heard certain languages doesn't mean that applies to everyone who uses AI glasses. Also, the glasses are not only used in USA. Don't be so obtuse, the universe does not revolve around you.

  • Aehm you know that the glasses are also sold in the EU but not in Asia?

Do you know how much effort it takes to teach an AI a complete new language?

Since Meta Platforms Inc is an US American company it's normal to implement US-English first and then the South American languages like Spanish and Portuguese.

And the European markets demands Italian French German and British English in order to be sold there.

Since Instagram Facebook WhatsApp and all of the Meta services are blocked in China there is no reason to implement the language. Quite the opposite...

So I think that you indeed might be the only person finding the language options not useful.

However, I wish you a great day anyway and a lot of fun with your glasses :)

OK, I'll wait and see what the Google glasses offers when they come out next year.

  • I understand what you’re saying. Vietnamese would be a highly practical addition, during my time in Vietnam, I used this guide while exploring, and I experienced how often the language is used in daily interactions. It clearly comes up more frequently than some European languages. Hopefully, future versions of the glasses offer options that can be used effectively in everyday situations.
