Meta and Motorcycle helmets don't mix

Why is it when I lift my visor up on my motorcycle helmet meta can hear me but when I put it down meta is just oblivious to my voice? I can clearly hear myself in the video with the visor down. I thought about using meta to record FPV riding/listening to music in my cheap helmet until my expensive one gets here but clearly without any control I will not be doing that.
