Had a similar problem with Spotify but the solution was simple.
Go to the phone settings where you can grant the phone/message app access to camera microphone and so on. There is this option "control nearby devices" or something like that (I'm no native speaker and android user so please excuse if I'm unclear) and that's the thing you have to toggle on.
