Wake word change confusion v 19.1

For the past two years, I’ve been saying “Okay Meta” as the wake word on my Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses — and it’s always worked perfectly.

After updating my Gen 2 Wayfarer to version 19.1, though, the glasses no longer respond properly. The LED lights up and you hear the activation sound, but it shuts off almost immediately. Say “Hey Meta”, the official wake word, and everything works as normal.

When I switch to my Gen 1 Headliner, “Okay Meta” still works fine with version 19.1.

Has anyone else noticed this change?

It may be that Meta was previously more liberal in recognising slight variations of the official wake word, and that the Gen 2 firmware is now stricter in how it maps and processes them.

After updating to v19.1, I thought I’d broken Meta Assistant functionality. Relieved I tried a slightly different wake word — more by accident than design!

I’m having to unlearn a habit built over the past two years. With the wake word change, saying “Hey Meta” instead of “Okay Meta” feels unnatural and already tough going.

After a day of use, I keep saying “Okay Meta”… and nothing happens. It’s surprisingly frustrating when something so small breaks the flow.

I really hope Meta makes the assistant more liberal with wake word recognition again. “Okay Meta” is stuck in my mind — and hard to shift.

    Hi there Colin.hughes.132778,

We noticed your post, and while you may not be able to change the wake word with the new update there is a handy feature that allows you to interact with Meta AI without having to wake it.

To turn Respond without “Hey Meta” on/off from the Meta AI app:

    • In the Meta AI App, tap the Glasses icon
    • If you have multiple devices paired with the Meta AI mobile app, swipe left or right to select the device you want to use
    • Tap Settings
    • Tap Meta AI
    • Select “Hey Meta” preferences
    • Tap the toggle next to Respond without “Hey Meta” to turn this feature on or off

When this feature is turned on:

The microphone will stay on for a brief duration after each request.

If you start talking within a few seconds following a voice command, the glasses will record and process your audio during that time.

The notification LED will show if your glasses are processing your audio.

The microphone will turn off automatically in a few seconds if no more requests are made.

A conversation with your glasses can be ended by saying "Stop" or "Cancel."

We hope this can help you make the most out of your glasses!

  • I am not looking to “change the wake word”. I am just curious about why the change in 19.1 after two years? and why I can still use “Ok Meta” on my Headliner Gen 1 running v 19.1 but not on my Wayfarer Gen 2 running v 19.1? There is an inconsistency

We regret that this change has impacted your user experience. However, we are confident that this change is intended to avoid conflicts with other smart devices. Using "Ok" as a wake word often triggers devices like Google Home and Android phones, which also wake with "Ok Google," causing the devices to misinterpret commands. Technology is constantly changing, and we don't want you to be left behind. We're sure you'll get used to it little by little.

Thanks but I think it’s better the users get to make the choice- plus “hey google” is still a trigger as well as “hey siri” I’ve got all and I’ve NEVER had a mis-trigger.

”we’re sure you’ll get used to it little by little” isn’t very user based.again taking away features - again as a new user i ask - where do you get the feedback to remover functions customers seem to like or want to have options.

No one uses “oi” why not use that if you don’t want to trigger others?? 😂

        “Left Behind” wow.

  • On my first day using the original out-of-the-box OS, I was okay. However, after an update, I can no longer access it. Now I understand why. Was this change listed anywhere? Why do Meta seem happy to remove features? Where do they get the feedback to remove or change functionality?

  • Personally, I have never had a problem of the Meta wake word triggering other smart devices, besides Siri also uses the “Hey” word

But the Meta’s explanation doesn’t explain why I can still say “OK Meta” on my Gen 1 glasses also running v 19.1 🤔

      To make it short:

The triggerword depends on your device and the Gen 2 glasses don't support that feature (yet).

Maybe you can politely ask the support team (by shaking your phone and reporting that bug) to add "Okay Meta" to the triggerword-list again?

Most of the things I have reported that way were fixed within a few days.

  • Hey Colin,

I feel you! I have got the Gen 1 too and I just checked the Meta AI-App. It clearly says that you can use "Hey Meta" or "Okay Meta". But it's in the device settings and those may differ from... well from... device to device obviously xD

I am also always saying "Okay Meta..." And would feel uncomfortable too with "Hey".

Maybe try something like "Ohh hey Meta" until the glasses accept the activation and slightly change it to "oh hay Meta" and finally to "oh k hay Meta"...

Hopefully the glasses will "learn" to accept that activation ;)

    • That’s great to hear. Not received 19.2 yet.  Hopefully, soon and Ok Meta working on the Wayfarer 🙏

    • Unfortunately, I just updated to version 19.2 on my Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 2 and "okay, meta" isn't working. 😞

Ah sorry to hear that. Hopefully Meta make the change and give people the option.
