VR Transparency

I am wondering if anyone with on-hand experience with the oculus is able to put some light on an idea of mine.

I see one of the potential problems with the oculus is that it is going to be hard to find mouse, keyboard, joystick etc. so I was wondering; what if the oculus had a (or two for depth perception) camera(or sensor) that would be able to recognize surfaces or colors (maybe even in IR) in the surroundings like the buttons on a keyboard, the mouse or any other physical device used for control in the VR. If this is at all possible I would imagine at least two possibilites:
1. The camera could feed the information back to the renderer that may in turn render a representation in the VR
2. The camera would simply project it directly to the oculus showing only the specific colors (best for this i imagine would be an IR backlight/reflecting keyboard or device) with a simple imaging filter, this would be very flexible with stickers, gloves for the hands etc

I can imagine a whole lot of problems regarding calibration and lag with option 1, however if/when the technology is there it would open for some pretty amazing interfacing, for example gloves for rendering vr-hands, etc etc. I can imagine that option 2 is going to present some rather ugly looking disturbances with real life video overlaying a beautiful 3D environment. Also maybe the depth perception is hard to calibrate with both options.

In any case, I'd like to hear whatever you think about this idea. Maybe its stupid and unrealistic, and in that case I dont have to waste my time on this idea! :D

  • I have a very similar project going on right now, It's called Oculus Eyes.

I can't believe that you've not received any answer yet. This is the most exciting idea I had about an Oculus rift improvement. I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one who had that idea but I'm a bit sad that nobody came up with a solution yet.

Anyway I decided to came up with a solution myself.

It's been under the radar since now because we would like to be come out as a functional prototype before unveiling to much information to the world.

We actually the whole concept details on paper and came up with solution to almost every problems we could face with that project but we still lack the expertise to actually create it.

We need a programmer and an electronic engineer.
