Feature Suggestion: “Clean Start” Account Transfer Option for Long-Term Users
To whom it may concern,
I’ve been a passionate user of Instagram since around 2015. Over the years, I’ve shared countless memories—photos, videos, stories—and as I’ve grown, my life has changed dramatically, as it does for many people.
However, with this long history often comes a psychological burden. As relationships evolve, friendships fade, or personal values shift, the digital traces of one’s past can become emotionally overwhelming. I often find myself wanting to leave the platform entirely—not because I dislike Instagram, but because the past feels too heavy to carry on in my current account.
This isn’t just a personal struggle. Many people in their 20s and 30s close their accounts and start new ones, sometimes due to breakups, marriage, career changes, or simply a need for a fresh digital identity. Unfortunately, this means they lose years of memories or have to go through a tedious process of backing up content manually.
That’s why I’d like to propose a new feature: a one-time “Clean Start Transfer.”
Here’s how it could work:
The user opts to transfer to a new account with a fresh handle and blank follower/following/message lists.
Their old account gets archived or deleted.
All photos, videos, stories, highlights, and optionally selected content (e.g., excluding tagged photos or past comments) get migrated to the new account.
A disclaimer could ensure this is a one-time-only migration to prevent abuse.
This would help users reclaim their comfort on the platform without sacrificing their memories. It’s a middle ground between a full wipe and a total loss.
I truly believe this feature would resonate with a large portion of Instagram’s long-term users and could even help retain those considering quitting the app entirely.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Ka an
(A long-time Instagram user)
