Aspiring Oculus Go Developer.. Market? Sales? Is it worth it?
Looking into picking up an Oculus Go and do some development for it. Part of this is to get better at VR dev in general, but I like the idea of creating more "bite sized" experiences for a more "mobile" VR setup. It would be nice to make a few bucks off of these experiences as well.
How has the Go been selling? Are there developers on here who can comment on application sales? Is it worth developing for the Go?
Thanks!

- Heaney-555Heroic ExplorerWhen you make a "Go" game with the Oculus Mobile SDK (or Unity), it also works on Gear VR, with no extra effort (they're binary compatible).
So don't think of it as being a "Go developer", think of it as being an "Oculus Mobile Developer".
Gear VR has 5 million units out there: https://www.roadtovr.com/samsung-sold-5-million-gear-vr-headsets/ - corriedotdevExplorerI am currently developing a short game for download, free. To test the waters, given the retention on this will dictate if i can afford to make another game profitable.
Its a buisness and feeds me, if it doesnt pass retention metrics its difficult to decide the best steps forward. Oculus VR however has proved to be OK in the market. - motorsepMember

Well, Gear VR's controller works perfectly, but Go's controller has d-pad issue that hasn't been fixed and no one knows if it will be fixed (and that on top of some other issues that won't be fixed in Go). So while technically you are correct, some considerations still have to be made for each platform individually.
That "5M unit" number is useless. Most of those folks got Gear VR for free, bundled with their phone. A lot of people don't even use Gear VR. Majority of Gear VR owners use it to watch pr0n and not play games.
