Can AI really learn from play?

I’ve been reading about how play can enhance learning, and it got me thinking about AI. Can our models really learn from playful interactions? I feel like a virtual world could be the perfect setting for this kind of exploration. 

Has anyone experimented with this? What are your thoughts on using play as a learning tool for AI?
