One Of The New Content Policy Guidelines Is Ridiculous!
No dismemberment in games available from the Oculus Store anymore..? Seriously?
Now I'm not working on a game that's going to have dismemberment in it but anyone developing a game with any sort of melee combat is going to be screwed.
You say that films with an R rating should be fine but those of us here in the UK have no idea what the equivalent is. I would guess an 18 certificate film would be the equivalent over here and 18 rated films have plenty of dismemberment.
Anyone working on a light saber/sword/[insert other weapon that can chop off heads and limbs here] game is pretty much fucked.
Where's the sense in this? Dismemberment has been a part of video games since the 80s, closing the door to this for the Oculus Store will mean that developers will end up releasing their games on Steam instead of the Oculus Store, which will be bad for all Rift owners given how much of a clusterfuck SteamVR is for Rift owners since the Rift launched more than 2 years ago.

- I've also remembered since posting this that the horror game I'm working will have dismemberment as well.
My game is set on a mining ship in deep space and I was planning on having the players needing to cut the thumbs off high raking crew members to open doors and gain access to important parts of the ship.
I'm guessing I can't do that now?

Not being allowed to have dismemberment of any kind in a video game is quite ridiculous when this has gone on for the last 30 years tbh. - If you can't chop the limb off a zombie......
- Technically wouldn't the famous Rift game "Robo Recall" be in violation of this policy (you are prompted to dismember the robots with your hands in one of the early tutorials)?

No because a Robot isn't a living thing. Same as Zombies in Arizona Sunshine their not in the land of the living their Zombies LOL. Seriously, though. A human character in a game isn't a living thing either, so I'm a bit confused what Oculus mean by all this.

Thanks. Well it WAS. It's looking like I won't be able to do it now. The ship is infested with parasites (similar to the face huggers in alien) that lay their eggs into their human hosts. As the eggs hatch and the creature starts to grow they turn the hosts paranoid/insane.
Basically all of the crew are dead, some killed by said parasites when they jump out of the host's body and the rest killed by each other due to paranoia and self defence.
I was also planning on having a few of these parasites here and there jumping out of bodies but due to this ridiculous censorship I'm guessing I can't do this either.
It would be great to get some sort of clarification on what us horror devs can and can't do.
One thing that I'm struggling with is that dismemberment is featured in many 18 rated films and games over here in the UK, and I'm assuming that this is also true of R rated games and films in the States, so why can't we have it in games for sale in the Oculus Store now?
It's looking like we're going to have to censor the crap out of horror games now. If you can't have gore and dismemberment then the vast majority of us are screwed. :(- I'm just giving this a *bump* because I need clarification on this gore and dismemberment issue.
@imperativity Will I be okay having game mechanics in my game where the player needs to chop thumbs off dead crew members to gain access to important parts of the ship and will I be okay having these parasites jumping out of corpses at the player?
This dismemberment thing is a real bummer if it's going to be strictly enforced for any horror games or games involving swords or lightsabers.
Dismemberment is fine in 18 rated and R rated films so why can't we have it in our VR games? Or can we? Some clarification would be great when you have an opportunity to look into it. Thanks.
