Subscriptions that are active past their period_end_time

Does anyone know if there is a default grace period on subscriptions?

I'm noticing that subscriptions that have a period_end_time a few days in the past are returning with an is_active of true. Is this expected? I'm trying to manage the internal status of subscriptions and would love more insight as to ensure the current active state is reflected.
