Suggestion for Developing an SDK for Meta Ray-ban Glasses
Hey everyone,
I'm curious: will there ever be a developer kit (SDK) available for Meta glasses? I think the glasses are great, but there's not much to do with them right now. So, I thought, why not build a community around it?
If Meta releases an API or something that other apps could call or interact with indirectly (since it seems there's already a service running in the background), this could enable commands from third-party apps. This way, you could allow users to develop their own apps and further customize the experience.
For example, let's say I want to do something customizable, like turning on my smart lights using the command "Hey Meta". My own app could register a command (or more than one) so that whenever I say "Hey Meta, [do something]", this command triggers (it could be a post or a deeplink) that my app could receive and then perform the desired action, only for that command. And if this API allows me to use the camera live, like we do in Instagram livestreams, the possibilities would be endless.
Think about it, everyone. I really want to build custom experiences with this, so please consider releasing an SDK for Meta glasses.
Thanks!

It's kind of ridiculous or at least offer a way to add custom commands. I asked meta if it could roll a dice and it was like no can't do I can only respond if you ask me for a random number between 1 and 6, and I was like ok can you provide me with a random number from 1 to 6 when I ask you to roll a dice.
No can't do I can only provide you with a random number between 1 and 6 if you ask me to do that. ...Overpriced glasses that can't do something as simple as rolling a dice when you can literally google "roll a dice" and get a better integration from a web search engine!!...
Thanks Anonymous and look here, glasses...

I just wanted to let everyone in this thread know that, while we don't have anything we're ready to share at this point, we are listening and your feedback is being forwarded back to the product team. Please do continue to let us know about things like this, and we promise that as soon as we have anything to share you'll hear about it on developers.meta.com.
- BarrySDCAExplorerIs that a commitment to publish an SDK and support third-party developers? It doesn’t sound like it. I appreciate you jumping in and at least telling us you’re listening, but I need to decide whether to return these glasses and start building on Mentra and Google XR (both with great developer support), or wait and stick with Meta. Frankly, I’m also experiencing headaches and urgently need new glasses, so the timing would have been ideal. Having been let down once already, I’m not inclined to wait around. It seems like a significant shift from the current closed-system approach, and it’s hard for me to believe Meta suddenly has a change of heart. I assume it’ll land somewhere in the middle, but that’s not enough. For a third party to invest time and effort into building on Meta, there needs to be a clear commitment from Meta to provide an SDK and full third-party developer support. I mean no locked down/closed anything. Let me talk to the hardware - make it fully accessible to my software. Anything less won’t suffice. The alternatives, like Google XR and Mentra, are far too attractive. Thank you.

Thanks Anonymous we appreciate that. Can't wait for the news 😀.
- BarrySDCAExplorerFollow-up: There is another player in the market named "Mentra." They already offer glasses that provide captions for people with hearing disabilities. They have new glasses coming out with a widely accessible SDK. So, between Google XR and Mentra, both with strong developer support, the pressure will be on Meta to open their glasses to developers. Google XR and Mentra have a vibrant ecosystem full of developers building for these devices (they are already building and are that much further ahead). Then there will be Meta, being Meta. I can't imagine that ends well for them.

Very much in support of this program being opened to developers! So many ideas lingering around that need to be built

Hey Dannark, found this when researching the same. If they do open up an SDK then I am keen. I've got an application in mind too!
Whats your superpower?

Man, the SDK is a must...
I'm a retired software developer currently legally blind and on big strides to full blind, i use the ray-ban metas to improve my quality of life, can't do much with them due to AI feature not being supported in Portugal... still an amazing support on my life.
SDK would be brilliant but allowing the AI in all countries and, since we're on a asking mood, allow for custom AI models to be loaded after Meta teams review.
Man, i have so many ideas, and already working models, that are built around a device like this (not sure if my hat with cameras gled on to it counts though) that would assist millions of blind and visual impaired.
Lets bump the metas into the incredible product it actualy is, unleash the power!!!! - iwantslicesHonored Guest
I would do anything for a SDK for the meta rayban smart glasses
I have so many ideas that i'm ready to code, I just need the ability to use the smart glasses and interface with them using my new apps

Came across this post while shopping the glasses. It really sucks that there is no API available for developers - the opportunities are endless for these smart glasses.
Hopefully, Meta is working on releasing it - just surprised they still haven't done it almost a year after release. Probably, this would boost sales even further.
