A test on seamless spherical stereo 360º video.

Hello group! :)

First post here. This is Antonio, a long term 360º panoramic photographer who has been creating seamless 2D 360º videos for some years now with a home brewed cinematic method based on a single camera and by means of using standard panoramic techniques&hardware: http://www.iceland2013.org/project/antonio-victor-garcia-serrano-a-practical-approach-to-full-360o-video.

After having been following here with great interest on the developments of Mediavr (and j1vvy, among others) in the field of Stereo panoramics, I have finally been motivated to extend my 360º video technique to account for stereo too. A test sample mp4 (left over right) at some different size (3k and 2K) and FPS (60 and 30) is available for download at:

Please note that this is just an initial "low cost" experiment which has helped to get my hands dirty with all the new concepts of stereo 360º video. It's been recorded with a pair of ELMO QBIC MS-1 on a cheapo home made stereo holder (67mm +-2 IPD). The source images are 6 pairs of photos and 2 pairs of videos synced with a clapper. Fully processed on PTGUI with a final resolution of 4K per eye @ 60FPS.

The way my test has been recorded shouldn't differ that much, I think, from ErikCaretta First test with 360 Panoramic stereo videos from Wed Jan 28. In my case I have fully closed the sphere and have also tried to get pretty close to the cameras to test on that limitation too.

These ELMO cameras present a compact and cheap option, but really lack the quality, especially on tough lighting situations. A next step into my research is to increase the image quality by using a better pair of cameras.

An interactive making-of pano of the recording can also be seen at http://pub.zakato.com/20150320/ and some photos of the rig set-up can be found at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ghb7bie7rpp8uh0/AADUCwKOKgSq_HVRFhr2YZfka?dl=0

Cheers,

Antonio
