Another dev laptop advice thread
Apologies as I know it's a subject that comes up fairly regularly, but I've not seen anything definitive so far..
Does anyone currently own a laptop that they've verified is working well with the DK2 (75Hz low persistance, low latency, no judder)?
If so what make / model do you have?
I know laptops are not ideal for Oculus development, and I already have a desktop system I'm using (and will continue to use) as a primary machine. However, I need a laptop capable of reasonably serious graphics work regardless, so if it's possible to choose one that plays nicely with VR it would be a major plus for travelling / giving demos.
I'm currently looking at the MSI 970M/980M based laptops asthey- some come without Optimus and I've yet to hear any horror stories about them. Anyone who can confirm / refute their oculus suitability?
In an ideal world I'd prefer 15" over 17" but the only 15" 980M laptops I've seen are optimus based. Has anyone spotted one that isn't?
Every optimus laptop I've tried so far has latency issues, so I've been assuming it's not something you can work around - if you know better please chime in!

- cyberealityGrand ChampionStay as far away from Optimus as possible. It's the worst thing that ever happened to computing.
- kingmickaHonored GuestHi, on my side i use a laptop since the DK1 and now with my DK2, I've got Alienware 17, i7-4700MQ, 17.3" Full HD, GTX 770M, 16GB with 8.1.
So far all is running quiet fine even senza peso run with best graphic selected. I run all in extended mode with the rift as main monitor with 75hz ( I desactivated the screen of the laptop in the nvidia control panel because is 60hz and in extended mode it seems to drop the frequency of the oculus). If you need more setup info don't hesitate. - rsjtaylorHonored GuestThanks, that's useful info - will have to have another look at the alienware lineup.
I've heard one success story with an MSI ghost GS60 2QE. Everything was reported as good bar some direct mode issues & the general annoyance of working in extended mode. Latency reported as fine but the dev in question didn't have a desktop machine to compare with. That laptop does have optimus (paired with a 970m)
Anyone have any experience with the MSI GT72 2QE ? The combination of 980m / non-optimus looks promising on paper. - ZandilRising StarI run a Clevo Horzie Laptop
Horize P370EM Clevo Gaming Laptop - Intel Ivy Bridge Processor : Intel Ivy Bridge i7-3630QM 2.4-3.4Ghz Turbo, Graphics Card : Crossfire AMD 7970M 4GB Graphics Card GDDR5 TOTAL, IC Diamond Paste : IC Diamond 24 Carat on CPU+GPU, Memory : 16GB 1600Mhz RAM.
Runs the DK2 perfect, Will be upgrading to a Nvidia SLI version later this year.
