I've been myself thinking of horror with Rift and ambient sounds and effects have always been the best source of scary atmosphere. Fiddling with different sounds in Audacity can result in very freaky sounds if placed in a right place at a right time.

A basic microphone, various household items and Audacity can certainly go a long way :)

Freesound is a collaborative database of Creative Commons Licensed sounds.

I agree with many here I usually use audio jungle ( get the most bang for your buck), along with sound rangers, music loops, and audio sparx, and you can sometimes get lucky with Sound bible and Freesound.

There're also free sounds - looking for 'creative commons'-licensed sound effects should help, Freesound has some, for example (though you may find more via Google). Be aware of the license - if you want to sell the game, you'll want to stick with the basic CC licensed sounds and avoid the ones with non-commercial or 'sharealike' clauses. You should be able to use public domain material, too - be sure to include the wilhelm scream in there somewhere!
