ASUS WAVI works great ... almost
I was initially very pleased with using an ASUS WAVI wireless setup with the Rift - low (enough) latency, good range, and the whole package is easily battery-powered. You have to run it at 720p or 1080p, as the WAVI does not handle 1280x800 properly, but a small inconvenience.
But then I started noticing "hiccups" in the USB data from the Rift, which manifests itself as the tracking freezing momentarily. This seems to get worse when the WAVI is in the backpack, and it gets quite hot. But it still happens to some degree when the WAVI is sitting out in free air.
Has anyone else seen this? I'm hoping it's just a bad unit I can replace. Had anyone using a WAVI NOT seen occasional USB dropouts? It's odd, because the video is always perfect, no matter how bad the USB gets. But they do use different mechanisms for the video and USB.
Thanks folks!

- makeableHonored GuestI have a wavi myself, but have been completely unable to get the USB to work. I'm assuming this is because of a lack of windows 8 drivers. Id assume you are running Windows 7, or do you have some magic to make it work on 8?
- MaxPalmerExplorerReally fed up. Tried 2 wireless USB solutions* on Windows 8. Neither works. Neither has any prospects for updated drivers.
* Q-Waves Wireless USB
* ASUS Wavi
Has anyone got either of these working on Windows 8? My main dev box is Windows 8 and I'd hate to have to shift it back to Windows 7. - cyberealityGrand ChampionI hope someone finds a solution.

I was almost ready to give up on a wireless rift on Windows 8, but I tried a few extra ideas and now have the WAVI working on Windows 8.1 with the Rift!
I've got a really neat cable/power set up on the wireless side: one battery pack, the WAVI, the Rift and control box, a USB power lead, a 12V power lead and an HDMI lead. I have no idea about latency, but the rift makes me sick no matter what I do (roll on DK2!).
Here's what I did:
First install the WAVI on a Windows 7 system and then copy the Wavi drivers folder from C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository - open the .inf file inside the most recent folder, it should be for the WAVI. Once you have identified the correct folder copy all the files in this folder to your Windows 8 machine.
Next, try to install the WAVI I software on Windows 8.1 (the latest Windows 7 x64 software in my case). When you plug in the WAVI, you should see an issue with a Wireless N device in device manager - 'no drivers can be found'. Look at the properties of this device and then try to update the driver. Browse to the copy of the drivers folder from the Windows 7 install. The drivers will then install under the Network adapters node (in my case I now see 4 items in device manager: ASUS WAVI wireless USB adapter, Intel (R) Ethernet Connection I217-V, RangeMax Wireless-N USB Adapter WN111v2, VirtualBox host only ethernet adapter). Plug in all the cables and fire up the rift and the tracking should work as well as the video.
Hope this helps someone! - cyberealityGrand ChampionInteresting. Thanks for sharing that info.
- AnonymousI would really like a wireless rift setup, but the more I think about it, the more a helmet HMD would be up my alley. All in one unit, battery powered, no wires :D http://www.networkworld.com/article/2160420/wireless/interop--don-t-sweat-802-11ac-wi-fi---because-802-11ad-will-knock-your-socks-off.html AC to AD should allow 2k res, so we're getting closer.
